Blade 14 2016 GTX 1060 Battery Bulge

Hi all,

I've had a Blade 14 with the GTX 1060 since December 2016. After about a year, in November 2017, the trackpad started to raise up and stop working. I suspected it was a bulging battery, but when I sent it in Razer assured me the battery was fine, replaced the trackpad, and sent it back. Of course, three months later the trackpad was raised again. This time they replaced the battery (for free); this was March 2018. So, it's been about another year, and I'm noticing the issue is happening again. Obviously, I'm out of the warranty period, and I know the options (buy a battery and replace it myself or send it to Razer to replace for probably 3x the cost).

My question is - is there a way to prevent this issue from happening, or is this just an issue with the batteries or design? The system typically sits plugged in, running, and open on my desk, with Synapse set to "quiet mode" unless I'm actively using it (which, frankly, I've done less and less since kicking my WoW habit and buying an Xbox One X and 4K TV last year). Do I need to be discharging the battery more often? Should I turn it off when I'm not using it? Should I leave it in "cool mode" instead of quiet to ensure maximum cooling? Or does none of this matter?

I don't really want to buy a new system right now - as I said, I've moved away from PC gaming so I really don't need to upgrade to an RTX model, and this thing still packs plenty of punch for anything I'd use it for anyway (which probably still will be true a year from now). But I also don't want to drop a bunch of money replacing a battery if the new one is going to do the same thing. So, any input on whether this issue is avoidable would be helpful.

Hi there! Let me taka a look at this. Can you share some photos of your Blade?
It's only just starting to be noticeable, so I'm not sure a photo would show you much. It's more noticeable by touch - I can easily feel that the trackpad is raised slightly above the mouse buttons at the center, but below them at the sides. The trackpad also seems to be non-responsive for about the first centimeter above the mouse buttons; above that, it works fine.

Mostly, though, I'm wondering if this is a usage issue on my part, or simply unavoidable with these batteries/design. If I discharge the battery more often, or leave it off when not in use, or don't leave it plugged in when not in use, will that avoid causing the battery to bulge?

All Lithium-ion batteries will eventually fail or have shorter discharge times as it ages, even if they are not used (since the temperature can also affect the batteries). It can swell as it weakens or is overly discharged, overly charged or cycled. I'd recommend having your unit looked at by the team, just in case. Let me know through PM if you have any questions.
