Core owners, what are you running?

  1. Yes, another Core failure thread. But wait! What are you running? I don't see anyone discussing root cause, so I thought it would be interesting to do so. For now, let's put aside the Razer CS bashing and talk about what you're running when you have these issues. I've got some theories, based on my 10+ years as an electrical engineer with a background in manufacturing and failure analysis, so help me out.

What video card are you running, and more importantly what is the power draw?
How many USB peripherals are you running? How many of them have LEDs? How many are Chroma enabled?

If this gets ignored, locked, deleted, whatever, that's fine. I'm just curious.

I'm running EVGA GTX 1070 FE, not quite sure how much power it's drawing, I have Blackwidow Chroma, Deathadder Chroma, ethernet, Dell USB Soundbar and Man O War Wireless connected to the Core. Only Man O War has Chroma disabled, mouse and keyboard have LEDs on.

And all your USB ports work fine with all that stuff? I've heard plenty of people complaining that their usb ports dont work right.

Yeah works fine for now. There were times when they were finicky in the past, but for now, it's good.

Nice! thats good to hear. im saving up for a blade and core myself right now, and a lot of the time it doesnt sound so well with the current core owners since we see a lot of complaints about things not working on this forum. Glad to see it should be working fine. I bet a lot of it just has to do with updates and getting newest drivers and stuff.

It's just most of us who have actual working units don't really post to say it works.
But the setup is pretty easy, but there was like an extra step to Razer's set up guide that I had to do to get it working, which was removing the external gpu in device manager (uninstalling driver), then rebooting and let windows find the driver for me.

ah okay. maybe a bunch of people just forgot that step so that causes a bunch of their issues. looking foward to getting my blade and core!

I have the Razer Blade 14 (mid-2016) with Razer Core + ASUS GTX 1080 FE. The graphics performance is phenomenal with a 15% loss compared to laptops that have GTX 1080 in them with similar specs.
The USB ports do not work for me though. Devices keep disconnecting (but not during gaming). I have a BW TE Chroma, Mamba TE Chroma and Firefly connected to the core.

  9. So the USB ports drop out when you're not gaming but they don't when you are?

  10. I have a new RBS connected to my Core. The graphics card in my Core is a Gigabyte GTX960 Windforce. I'm not sure of the power draw, but it does use both power connectors.

I know where you're going with the USB power thing, but all of mine in my video posted earlier were connected to a powered USB hub. All of those devices work fine when the hub is connected to the PC. However, you're right in that the video card could be pulling too much power for the circuitry of the hub built into the Core.

The video I posted is an extreme example. When I just plug the keyboard and mouse into the core (nothing else), the issue is more subtle. When gaming my mouse will freeze for the briefest of instances causing me to run into walls, etc. Keyboard misses keystrokes, etc.

My full setup has the following

RBS --> Core --> 6 port powered USB Hub --> USB devices

    USB Device list

    Razer Black Widow Chroma
    Razer Death Adder Chroma
    Razer FireFly (Chroma of course)
    Generic USB sound card
Logitech Headset - Connected to Black Widow (Rumor is I'm getting a Kraken from my wife for Christmas)

  11. I understand where you are coming from, but the USB hub chipset itself can get brownouts causing the USB dropouts as well. Your issues would support that theory as the greater load on the chipset would show more frequent and pronounced issues. I'd be interested in the PSU specs for the Razer core and whether someone has the fortitude to attempt a Frankenstein power supply to see if that clears up the issues.

    Exactly. I don't know why.

  13. Some manufacturers quote power draw.

There are other methods, I don't supposed a lot of you have current clamps at home.

  15. Which is fantastic. No arguments here.

But, I don't see a thread where Razer is discussing what is happening with the Cores. So, I figured we, the fans, could discuss it; constructively of course, without Razer bashing.

  16. I purchased a Core back in the spring to go with my Blade Stealth and used it for about 10 days before returning it. I experienced some minor USB/Ethernet problems (I just used WiFi most of the time) but for the most part the Core worked as advertised. My biggest complaint was the noise level. I've since purchased another Core off Ebay 2nd hand (Fedex say's it was delivered today) and I have every intention of tearing into this one. My motives are different, I want to make the thing as silent as possible, but I think it will be interesting to see if replacing the PSU makes any difference as far as USB/Ethernet problems are concerned. From my memory the Core uses an SFX PSU which shouldn't be a problem to switch out.

  17. Awesome. I for one really look forward to what you learn.
