If you want action then I recommend JoJo's Bizzare Adventure and Hunter X Hunter(2011).

If you want mech then I recommend Gundam 00 or Gundam Wing. If you don't mind something a bit dated then give Tekkaman Blade a try.

If you want something like SAO then definitely watch Log Horizon. I personally felt it was much better.

If you want all round hilarity, epic action and parodies of all the above (including like half the anime on this thread) then watch Gintama.

    Something recent: Attack on Titan
    Something older: Death Note
    Love both of those

^ Also I second this and the sequel, Legend of Korra. Aside from being produced in America, these essentially are anime; they're even animated by a Korean studio.

This is coming from someone who also enjoyed FMA and DBZ.

So many of my favorites have already been listed, but I don't think I saw Samurai Champloo. I'd recommend that one.

If you want something that's kinda out there but really entertaining then I would suggest Durarara. It gets weird sometimes but it has plenty of great moments.

It seemed interesting, but it was so hard for me to keep up with this. Reading subtitles and all the on-screen chat messages... no way. I don't normally like to watch dubbed anime, but even then, it was really hard for me to keep up with who was who and what was happeneing, so I never really got into it =/
