Borderland 2 is AWESOME and has 4 player co op. It still remains one of my favorite games. PAYDAY 2 is another great 4 person co op all about robbing banks. These are my two go to co op games.

Platform? Preference of genre? Local or online?

Mount Your Friends is cheap and I've heard good things about its fun factor, though I haven't played it myself. Gauntlet is good fun, and also somewhat inexpensive. Smash Bros. if you have a Wii U, Fantasy Life is pretty addicting and has some co-op if you're into semi-casual 3DS games. Borderlands, Payday, and Left4Dead are always good for 4 player co-op if that's your style and you haven't played through them yet. Halo is always good times if you have an Xbone. There's a lot of options out there, haha.

Personally, I really like L4D or L4D2 for co-op. I feel like they did a good job with the game overall. I've spent countless hours with friends on that game and just downloading maps made by the community.

To add two of my personal favorites:

    Army of Two
    Dead Island

Lots of fun together if you like 3rd Person shooters.

The most fun I've had with my friends was Borderlands 1 and 2, although haven't done pre-sequel yet. The Portal 2 co-op was also a blast.

The pre sequel is A LOT of fun. One of it's biggest "complaints" is that it doesn't stray far from the first 2 games. Which I actually love. The humor is pretty much the same which is one of my main draws to it. The different classes are tons of fun too. I have athena (the galdiator) and CLaptrap,or as i liked to call him "Oh5napTrap" ... His action skill is probably the best I've experienced in all the games.

I forgot to mention one of the best old ones (in my opinion):

Cannot tell you how much I enjoyed the heck out of Borderlands 2. Definitely play that and the presequel with your mates. If you enjoy co-op shooter/fps style games, Payday and L4D2 are pretty good. An indie game that's also pretty fun I've found is dungeon defenders.

If you're looking for non-shooter co-op games there are a ton of great indie ones. Magicka and Castle Crashers are great fun with mates and are dirt cheap on steam sales at the moment.

I would say Rainbow six: Las Vegas. I remember playing and enjoying the missions with my friend. L4D and L4D2 are also fun but I like a story based co-op...

Most co-op games are just single player games made multiplayer with more enemies and bosses with more hit points and better loot. It shouldn't be that way.

True co-op should be games that require actual cooperation between the players in order to succeed. The Portal 2: Cooperative Testing Initiative, for instance, is my idea of great co-op. Evolve is another.

Portal 1/2, Minecraft, anything sandbox related can work.
