I know World of Warcraft has been around for a long time so I was wondering if its still worth starting off in 2018. I have always been interested in playing it but I've been afraid that I would only be surrounded by players of a much higher level than me as its been out for so long. Also, is it a good single player experience or is it worth joining a guild etc. If so, I don't know anyone else who plays the game so how would I join one?

Right now WoW is at the end of the legion expansion because of that and also because Blizzard released 2 new races this is the best moment to level up. If you are afraid of pvp you can join a pve realm. WoW especially while you are leveling up is mostly single player even when you join a group dungeon ppl don't interact. You should always join a Guild even if you don't raid because you get some perks and also because you can ask question in guild chat. Keep in mind that because we are at the end of the expansion the number of ppl online is doing to decrease over time until the next expansion is released.

As above - PvP can be overwhelming sometimes, when you're on low lvl (each fraction rushing their cities frequently), but if you're doing quests you should lvl up really fast.
You can play solo, completing the quests, but you'll not do the instances. Playing with friends or with guild = more fun.

I'd say yes if you have the time and money. I'm not familiar with WoW specifically but those types of games need a lot of time and dedication to get the full experience.

I'm still playing WoW after a decade, and with Legion it has regain a lot of fun lost in previous extension.

Starting now would allow you to get stuffed enough (once you've reach lvl 110) to start the Battle for Azeroth (launch by the end of the year) with some pretty comfort.

I gave up on wow.... Havent played since about 6 months into Legion.... My favorite Expansion Packs are WotLK and MoP by far. WoD was okay and Legion is really cool, but sometimes it gets tiring to do never ending quests.... I am now more of an Ark: Survival Evolved player...
