Known defect with Razer batteries bulging/swelling?

I just noticed that my 2016 Razer Blade's battery has started to bulge. I contacted support about getting a replacement battery. I also then started to search online about this issue and noticed that there are a lot of Razer customers complaining about this issue on Reddit, Twitter, YouTube, etc. It seems at first glance that this issue is so common that it ought to be recall-worthy. Does anyone know if Razer has issued a recall, made a public statement about the issue, offered warranty exceptions, or done anything else to address this issue specifically? I'm seeing multiple folks who have had their Razer laptop for less than a year experiencing this issue which seems really bizarre. I'm seeing far less folks complain about this issue for MSI, Alienware, etc.

If after all these years Razer hasn't done anything to address historical battery issues like this and taken steps to prevent future issues like this, I'd be really hesitant to buy another laptop from them again, and I'd encourage others to consider the same

Have you experienced this issue?

Hello there! Can you share some photos of your Blade as well as the serial number to me through PM? I'll take it from there.

Hello Razer.

Can you also take a look into my case as well?

I have the exact same problem with my razer blade but do not know where to direct this problem to.

I already have tried calling numerous times to the customer service but they never pick up the phone.

Please kindly advise. Thank you.

Hi there! I've replied to your PM. Let's continue there.
Hello Red Panda,

Here is few pictures of my 3 yrs old battery pack I removed today from my Blade 14" 2016

The touch pad was all swollen, and more annoying, both touch pad buttons are now unworkable as the battery broke the nap connector on the mother board.

The more concerning is that the battery could have blow up while I am at work and start a fire on my wooden desk

Hi there! Please PM me the serial number. I'll pick it up from there.
I've been in the same boat for several months, just finally had the time to really investigate why my Mamba wasn't recharging on the base -- because I too have a battery swollen such that it won't sit flush on the recharge pedestal. Attaching 3 pics: 2 of the battery not able to sit flat on a desk and the 3rd with the battery cover unable to close.

Hi there! Please PM me the serial number of your Mamba. I'll pick it up from there.
I've found i have the same issue on my 2016 Blade 15". Though my touch pad still works, i can see the little ribbon is being tugged from the connector.

Noticed today that the touch pad and base are bulging in the 3 areas that the battery swells. Reached out using my wrong email a few weeks back and only just realised so reached out again today.
Hopefully this can get sorted and isn't related to the heating issues these things have.
@jeorgegetson
You need to remove the battery asap and before damage are too important.
once the battery is all swollen, you may break the ribbon when you will remove the back plate screws
so I would not wait and already remove the battery pack before something get broken on the MB

Hey D8, havent tried yet, but will the laptop function without a battery?

I use it for work but can do that so long as the PSU is enough to get me by.

Cheers.
Yes, my Blade works without the battery pack inside

cheers

Hello Red Panda, all,

First of all, I would like to take a minute to thank Red Panda for all the help and assistance you are giving us. That is very much appreciated.

Unfortunately, I just received a message from the support team: "since my Blade 2016 is no longer in warranty, repair fee + replacement parts cost will apply." In my case, it will be expensive as not only the battery needs to be replaced, but along, the Mother Board due to the broken ribbon plug that costs 10 cents...

In another words: if your blade is from 2016, 2 yrs warranty applies, so no support from Razer is to be expected...

so replacement of the battery for me with after market compatible one, and use of a mouse now mandatory for ever with my Blade 14"

This laptop is by far, the shortest life span laptop I have ever owned - Not sure I will buy again a Razer laptop... :slightly_sad:
