New Headset vs Razer seiren

Discussion in 'Audio' started by RealBobFish, Jul 10, 2016.

What do you think I should do?

  1. Ditch megalodon and buy a kraken 7.1 chroma.

  2. Keep megalodon and buy a razer seiren.

Hey everyone. I have a razer megalodon which I've had for three years and unfortunately the mic is pretty awful now and I usually get complaints of it going VERY bad every few minutes for a short period of time. I am using it with a powered USB hub but that didn't fix it unfortunately.

I'd also like to use a headset with my new blade stealth but unfortunately due to the (VERY useful with a desk but unfortunately kinda annoying without one) volume changer box thing, it is a little hard to).

I used to make youtube videos but now this would mainly be used for skype. I do a bit of indie game development though and may potentially make showcase videos and things like that in the future.

So, the way I see it I have three options:

    1. Ditch megalodon and buy a kraken 7.1 chroma.
+ Better mic then current setup
    + cheaper then option 2
+ can use with my stealth (and CHROMA LIGHTING to match it) easily while in bed and travelling.

    - Not as good mic as option 2
    - I really only need to upgrade the mic and not the headset so I feel like I'm wasting the megalodon despite this being the cheaper option.

    2. Keep megalodon and buy a razer seiren.
    + Much better sound quality
+ keep the megalodon (don't waste the resources on another headset)

    - Costs an extra $100 AUD + $30 for a pop filter. This is my birthday money so it cuts into me buying books / another 360 controller for playing rocket league with friends / other stuff. This extra cost may not be necessary.
    - can't as easily use with my laptop if I want to game with friends while sitting in bed.

    What do you people think?

    Thank you.

I think option 1 is better, I have the kraken 7.1 Chroma, and the mic is pretty good, never had bad experiences with it

Thank you for this. I'm leaning towards that option at the moment and your opinion is helping :)

I have the Razer Siren, and a RBS, but to be honest, you don't really need to buy a pop filter unless you are a professional streamer, and even if you are, you still don't really need it. I use my Razer Siren for youtube too, and I think it's a great mic (if I know how to use it at it's full potential, I just found out I could listen to my own voice by connecting my headset to the Siren)
So your choice is to think, if you are going to use this in a long-term time?
Because if you are going to get the Siren, you have never worry about getting a mic for a really long time, as it is on the higer ends for mics.

But if you get the Kraken, you will be getting a lot better sound quality in gaming, cool chroma lights, and a working mic that will only sound cheap. Sound recorded will not sound more natural and exact than the Siren.

    So your choice is:
    - more price for a great quality mic (think about what you are using it for).
    - Cool chorma lights that u will get bored of after a month with cheaper price, good sound quality, but a normal headset mic you get on most typical headsets.

    Hope this helps!

This is a great summary of my choices. I'm still unsure but you've definitely helped. Thank you!

Unless you want to go pro and stream the siren isnt worth it. Try the man o war, I hear the mic is pretty good.

The man o war would be perfect if wasn't almost as expensive as me buying both the kraken chroma and the seiren

I'm glad i helped, but to end your choice, think about what you are using it for,
    Are u using it for:
Professional recording now or in the near future?
Just casually talking to friends and record random things sometimes.

Becuase just recently I was just deciding to buy a Razer Mamba TE or Orochi.
Then I think about what is my need right now, why do I need to buy it, what do I already have that is good enough for it.

Because before I brought the Siren, I just bought a headset to replace my old one for a better mic.

Afterwards, I realized that the mic was bad, and my luckily the Siren was on special, so I brought that, and I was happy, so now I don't have to worry about a better mic, ever again :)

'now this would mainly be used for skype. I do a bit of indie game development though and may potentially make showcase videos and things like that in the future.' But if that is what you are going to do, think about if you are going to make showcase videos continuously, or just sometimes, because if it's sometimes, it's better to just stay with the Kraken, and if you do choose the Kraken, I'd prefer the Man o war over it (if I don't need the Siren).

Think about how you are going to use, what are you using it for, what do you already have, and is it necessary.

u could maybe get a clip on mic, works very well for me no complains by my peers. Costs around 10 bucks for me

Good idea but does it take up an extra USB port?

Very nice reply and very helpful. I'll probably either pick up a man o war (if I can find one for cheaper then the Siren) or I'll get the siren. I'm also kinda curious, did you get either the orochi or the mamba TE?

I got the Orochi, because I needed something that was portable and easy to pack up while i'm on the train or the bus.

If you could, I would go for a Man-o'-War and a Seiren Pro :)

I'm also interested in picking up an orochi and after doing some research I've found I could either buy an orochi + kraken chroma for about $20 less then just buying a man o war. I also think the man o war is a bit bigger then the kraken (is this true?)

The more I think about it, it seems like the man o war is simply too expensive. I've been unable to find any comparisons of differences (other then one being wireless) between the two headsets.

That is the only difference (and a bit different design).

Oh is it? I think I just remembered reading some time that the mic sound quality was a bit better on the man o war but I honestly don't remember...

Unless you are planning to twitch stream or something you don't really need a sieren. Headset mic is fine for voice chat.

Nope :) it uses the red colored input 3.55mm (i think that's the dimension) for pc and if it's laptop you can just use the inbuilt mic haha

Well that's good. I shall investigate this as an option.

Ok everyone, I have finally decided. I shall be purchasing a Razer Kraken Chroma as the wire isn't going to bother me enough to justify an extra $100 + for a man o war (same with the very slight audio quality increase).

I've been thinking a lot about what Dat1Fish said and have decided this is the best choice. I also decided to not buy the orochi which I was really tempted to because of the fact that my $20 logitech mouse works extremely well and I don't play any competitive games which would require the additional precision. (I also stopped myself from the major reason of having matching chroma lights with my stealth.)

Thank you everyone who has helped!

Oh well go with the krakens then, the siren is meant for serious streamers, not sure if you would benefit from that.
