Razer Blade 2016 screen flashing periodically

  1. Well I've finally started to experience a consistent issue with my new Razer Blade. :slightly_sad:

What happens is that the internal and/or external screen will go black for 1-5 seconds and then turn back on. This occurs randomly in the middle of normal desktop use.

The problem appears when plugged into power or running on battery mode, on the internal display.

When hooked up to an external display via HDMI, the problem occurs somewhat frequently, usually at least 5-10 minutes between occurances, sometimes many hours.

When hooked up to an external display via Thunderbolt 3 to DisplayPort adapter, the problem happens much more frequently, perhaps every 6 minutes consistently.

I've played with NVidia settings to try to force it to always use the NVidia card, but this doesn't seem to have any impact. I also disabled the Intel HD graphics card in Device Manager and this actually seemed to prevent NVidia from seeing it's own card at all (and totally disables external monitor ports). Very strange.

I don't see any events in Event Viewer from times close to when this occurs.

Any ideas what I can do to debug this further?

Hey, sorry that I can't help too much, but I also had this problem with my laptop. It was an HP, and the problem was the hard drive, do you happen to get any alerts? Mine showed a HDD failure sometimes, not good! Hopefully Razer replies to you somehow, but anyways, best of luck! I hope it gets fixed!

@blueapples So it's happening with both the dGPU and the integrated graphics? Try updating the drivers or the software that run the Intel and the Nvidia card. When I first got my Blade, there was a rare flicker when using the dGPU, but I went into the Nvidia control panel and it turns out there was a driver update right off the bat to fix that, and there may have been another since (don't remember for sure). I think that the nvidia drivers loaded onto the blade aren't the most recent.
  4. Nvidiadrivers were updated when I noticed this happening unfortunately. Actually I think it started happening after I did a bunch of updates because the first several days were totally smooth. What it really seems like is the Intel and Nvidia drivers fighting over who gets to handle the screen.

I ended up going into Intel HD Graphics Control Panel and disabling Application Optiomal Mode and set General Settings to "Quality". I also went into the Nvidia control panel and set the default card to Nvidia instead of auto. Neither change seemed to have an immediate effect but after a restart or two the thunderbolt 3 port with my displayport adapter has become very stable, where before it was blinking off every 2-5 minutes very, very consistently. I haven't noticed it happen again in about 8 hours of total use since I changed the settings.

Not at all confident that this actually is the fix for me but it's something to try if anyone else runs into the issue.

I haven't heard back on my support ticket yet. We'll see what they have to say as well but RMA is not really an option I want to pursue since this doesn't feel like hardware failure at all.

Yeah this is really baffling, haven't had the issue all weekend while running picture in picture on my monitor and playing no man's sky constantly. I'm beginning to suspect a periodic power issue, but testing with my power conditioner didn't seem to help the issue much so I'm unsure.
