Razer Blade 2017 Bios Brick - Repair Costs

Hello everyone,

long Story short:
After installing the Spectre Bios Update on my 2017 Razer Blade the EC Firmware switched from 4.0 to 2.0. I thought installing the EC Firmware 4.0 Update could resolve this Problem, not knowing that this Update only works for the 2016 Razer Blades.
Unfortunately the installing program didn't even mention any complications installing this EC Firmware on my 2017 blade.

Well, I cannot turn on my blade and it has to be repaired somehow.
Do you know how much it could possibly cost? Is Razer exchanging the whole Mainboard or only the Bios Chip?

I am out of warranty.

Thanks in advance!
Best regards

You could see if resetting the cmos battery will help (you will need to google this, but it shouldn't be too complex) - otherwise I have no idea, sorry.
Hopefully someone on here will know

I did notice though a few people had the same issue on release, and the EC update really shouldn't let you apply it if it kills it - so do contact Razer first and see if they can fix it for you - after all if this was happening two years ago they really should have found a way to stop people being able to install it

The other article suggested draining the battery (and probably cmos if you can): /dont-update-new-blade-stealth-with-ec-update.16606/
Thanks for your help!

I already did reset the Bios cmos battery, which didn't help. I also tried an EC Reset but it didn't change anything. Unless I'm unable to turn on my blade I really cannot drain the battery.
I already contacted razer about this issue, but they couldn't tell me, how much the repair would cost approximately. I'm worried that they only can exchange the whole Mainboard, which will cost quiet a fortune not having any warranty left.

Greetings
Sorry it

Sorry it wasn't more use.

If they can't give you a price for repair, maybe ask how much to reflash the EC unit (which they should be able to do - and the other post above suggests they do under an RMA) and how much to replace a motherboard/the ec part.

If it is the motherboard, it should depend on what is removable. I can't imagine the motherboard alone is more than £300 (considering desktop ones are around the £150 mark).

Failing that, if you have home insurance (contents with accidental damage) - you could possibly use that if something else "happened" to the laptop

Good luck anyway I hope someone more knowledgabe can help 🙂
Thanks for all the information. I also hope that others could tell me there experiences with a bricked bios on their blades and how it got fixed.

Greetings

Update: I sent my Blade to the German Razer Repair Center and they said that a replacement of the motherboard is nessecary. It will cost 900€!!!

I'm not mad at the pricing. I'm mad at the fact that razer is repairing an software/bios firmware issue by just replacing the whole motherboard instead of replacing the bios chip which is much more evnironmentally friendly.
But Razer isn't the only company who's acting so wastefully. Apple for example is even worse.

wow, that's pretty shocking, though I guess it has the cpu and gpu on board.

Replacing the BIOS chip involves skill and things like soldering, rather than just a replacement (which is cheaper for them in the end) - Though crap that the cost gets passed on to you 😞
brickl means must chnage whole mobo so pretty ex my screen already cost me 6xx and it is under warrenty btu they chrage labour and mine is razer blade 15 easy to find the parts
Did you found out a solution? I have the same problem on my blade 14 2016, razer support wants me to ship it to them but im in Mexico and that is more expensive shipping just for the diagnosis, also they can't ship it back! so I need someone to receive it on USA... and I don't know if they will only throw a new motherboard and charge me 1000 USD, which I won't pay bc I bought the laptop used for 900!
Just sell it on eBay as defective. I'm pretty sure, Razer will just swap the motherboard for at least 900 bucks.

Oh my holy shit!!! Razer would like to screw you...

Just find a good technician! Or try it by yourself, here is a video :

A USB programmer isnt expensive. If you are from Berlin i knew a good technician who would help you... also nearly any TV technician can help you with soldering.

That isnt a big problem ... and its not worth to sell your device as defective or sell 900 bucks to razer 😉

It isn’t that simple you should also find appropriate bios version that could also work with Blade mobo. Yes I’m agree though it’ll be more environment friendly and reliable if they fix the Bios not entirely mobo. Maybe there’s other reasons they do that. Weird though Blade 2017 is released in March 2017, if poeple buy from Razer Store or official reseller it’s still under warranty due EU costumers protection Law. I sent my 2017 last June for diagnosis on 14th month owning it, and all was covered under warranty, including exchanged parts and shipping, I’m also from Germany Monnem;)
