Razer Blade Bloated Batteries ?

This is interesting topic thats need to pull up. i have been reading a lot from insider, reddit, ltt, and others forums regarding same issue Bloated batteries.

what causes this. why this is happening ?
Razer Support, All Lithium-Ion batteries can and will generate gases via a process called electrolyte decomposition. This can occur for several reasons including exposure to temperatures, overcharging the battery, over-discharging the battery, etc


Aaccording from Razer Support:
Razer Blade Lithium-ion batteries are designed to operate within a temperature range of 0° C (32° F) to 40° C (104 °F). Should the temperature exceed this range, unplug and/or switch off the device.


The Blade laptops have an internal circuit to stop charging at full charge to avoid overcharging and will only start recharging when the battery falls below 95%.


That being said, most of Blade User is noob about tech ( assuming most of the user ) they dont know how to check blade temp etc. so what if for future update there some kind of kill switch or a warning when your blade is reaching or close to certain temp to preventing bloated batteries that can cause harmful for the user.
Also i wonder one of the reason bloated batteries is from over charging, what is that mean ? is this for older version Razer blade or recent Blade ? that has feature to stop charging when reaching certain battery percentage ?

I am personally owned Razer Blade, since the day i got my hands on the first thing i did was to unplug the batteries and put it in safe place, for this reason im afraid that one day my batteries bloated and damge the rest of my blade. coz just like other Blade Users they used their blade not for short period of time. the reason they have blade so they can work gaming and do what they do with it while on the go. just recently i put it back my batteries to my blade for health check. as soon as im done i take it off for safety purposes.,

what do you think ? am i wrong ?

I understand your concern, but aren't you using your laptop as a desktop now? Or just taking the charger with you?

im using my laptop for both purposes, desktop and on the go.

Not just Blade, but many laptops can face this problem. Depending on power / performance & size of laptop and how far the users are willing to drive it with effective cooling as a considerable measure.

Not just Blade, but many laptops can face this problem. Depending on power / performance & size of laptop and how far the users are willing to drive it with effective cooling as a considerable measure.

from experience most of bloated batteries coz of over charging ( not for recent blade - 2019 and up). the new issue is coming from higher temp
because its common maybe for future update that would be great for blade line.
future update there some kind of kill switch or a warning when your blade is reaching or close to certain temp to preventing bloated batteries that can cause harmful for the user

Overcharging Li-ion batteries is not a problem and does not affect the battery life span. The Blade laptops have an internal circuit to stop charging at full charge to avoid overcharging and will only start recharging when the battery hits 95%.
That’s from blade support page, though repeating charging from 95% to 100 might also wear the battery faster, so it’ll be great if they lower to 80% stop charging as other oem does. Battery bloat beside heat (btw it’s written on the unit I believe not to use it above 65 celcius environment, not sure how support claim that 40 degrees, since depends the workload it can easily surpass that temperature ranges, according notebookcheck thermal sensor on battery areas it was around high 40 degrees on surface, internal should maybe 5 degrees higher) is also because bad battery manufactur (quality), worse case bad design where battery is put near hot parts, but the later I don’t think since it’s only near ssd where its heat is dissipated directly to cassis on current models.

what i do understand for Blade line, they placed batteries far from hot component. what i dont understand is why the batteries still bloated even tho its stop charging at 95% ( my blade stop at 96% ) and battery design far from hot component. defect batteries from the company or something else that trigger the batteries bloated ?

There is no clear analysis of what cause the batteries to bloat, but every man made products are determined to cause a fault, defects etc.

No matter how many times we say "we don't want it to happen", it is inevitable and happens to the best of us :frown_::confused_::stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye_:

When something breaks (with the battery), we go through factors of~~~

  • Poor choice in materials
  • Poor labour
  • Environment (hot as lava?)
  • Our interaction with the devices

I have not encountered a battery bloat before. I try to consider all factors that can cause defects on my devices and use it at ease. But internal heat builds is one of the factors that reinforce the battery bloats. Otherwise the battery manufacturers should try re-engineer the batteries to be everlasting~~

We had few Dell XPS with bloated batteries, so it's not one company problem.
As @Joikansai said - battery electronics will cut-off the power, to prevent overcharging.

From my personal experience - I always try to load battery up to 75-80% to increase battery lifespan (less charge cycles used).

fully charged batteries carrying the burden on battery cells can reduce the lifespan.

Just remember something that not most of us Users know about it which is our interaction with the devices, meaning :
one of the reason cause batteries bloated is because of high temp. high temp causes from many thing such as,overcloaking, overload your blade. and last thing that one very important is to maintain your devices. no matter how safe, or how care you are about your device if you are not maintaning like clean your fans. it will block most of the air circulation into your system that trying to cooling down the devices. i think this is need to mark it up for future razer support update.

personally im often to clean my blade every once a month or if you lazy you can do it every once in 3 month that is the least you have to do. coz of the dust that are collected by ur fans its real problem when they are thick
