Razer Blade help

Hi Razer community

My Razer laptop is running very slow recently when playing games and wanted some expertise to help speed this up. Any help is greatly appreciated.

My laptop is a 2018 Razer Blade 15 running a GTX 1070 Max Q - driver update 466.47

I’ve reset the laptop to factory settings and updated Windows, so there is nothing really on my internal SSD.

The games are running off an external SSD via USB-C

When playing games (tested with Fortnite) I used to get 200fps, now I’m getting between 10-30.

I’m not a PC expert but very much new to the PC world so please bare with me if I haven’t done any of the obvious things to improve this.

Please help with any suggestions to get this laptop running to the best it should and can be.

Many thanks

First off, never, ever, EVER install anything on an external drive. No games, no programs. External drives should be used for storage only.

Once you have your games installed on the internal drive, install HWMonitor from CPUID and watch the temperatures of the CPU and GPU when you're gaming. Anything above 90°C is troublesome, anything above 95°C is going to require cleaning the dust out of the fans and heatsinks, and possibly having the thermal paste reapplied. When either the CPU or GPU get that hot they slow down or 'throttle' which is the main cause of performance loss in a laptop.

You will want to try all the suggestions of @UTMorpheus. Installing the games onto your internal storage should also improve game performance. If that doesn't help, you will want to monitor the temperatures when gaming to check for possible thermal throttling. Do send me a PM so I can help you further isolate the problem.
