  1. Now that the new RBP is out with Kaby Lake, has anyone been able to install Linux on it? What is working and not working? What is that trackpad like with Linux? What work arounds are necessary?

Also, is it necessary to use Bumblebee / Optimus with the new RBP? I don't see a reference to any graphics switching, just a straight 1080 GTX.

  2. I've got ubuntu gnome 17.04 installed, unraided the ssds and set one up for window half of another for linux, it boots, wireless works, mouse cursor kinda wonky on login screen. haven't had much time to to do much else with it. i'll post back when i have more time.
  3. rturpen, did you *have* to un-raid the drives, or is that something that you opted to on your own initiative?

How is the cursor working other than on the login screen? Any more info you can give would be greatly appreciated.
  4. I un-raided the drives because I wanted separate drives, although I read some postings earlier about it being neccessary until linux had the drivers for the intel raid built in. I do not know if it will work without un-raiding it.

The mouse worked fine after I logged in, it was just tracking in fits and starts on the login screen. Sound works, 4k works, wireless works, did not get very hot.

I haven't had a chance to boot into it again yet, been busy. If there is something specific you would like me to check, let me know and I'll try to get to it tonight.
  5. Could you check webcam? Multi-touch on the trackpad? Are you using Bumblebee for graphics switching?

Also, does anyone know about the RAIDing on the drives?
  6. There is no bumblebee as there is no graphics switching to be done as far as I know. From what I have read there is no optimus with gsync. I'll try the trackpad and webcam tonight.
  7. Awesome, thank you! Let me know how it goes.

  8. webcam driver crashes after half a frame, but does show something, so prolly a relatively easy fix. Touchpad 2 finger scroll up and down works, page back and forward right left scroll does not appear to work, tested in firefox.

if anyone has suggestions of drivers to try or a diff distro to try let me know.

I'd consider updating to latest kernel which is 4.11 due to the fact it includes quite a few updates that benefits kaby lake, I've attached the steps below.

    cd /tmp
    wget \
    kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.11.3/linux-headers-4.11.3-041103_4.11.3-041103.201705251233_all.deb \
    kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.11.3/linux-headers-4.11.3-041103-generic_4.11.3-041103.201705251233_amd64.deb \
    sudo dpkg -i linux-headers-4.11*.deb linux-image-4.11*.deb

  12. I agree with Razor950, rturpen. Ubuntu doesn't automatically include the 4.11 kernel update yet, even though that kernel update is critical to Kaby Lake support. You have to do it manually.
  13. Sorry, been super busy, will try this tonight and let you know what starts working better...
  14. Just an update that I set up the 2017 RBP with Elementary OS and the 4.11 kernel. It is insanely smooth and beautiful. The touchpad is working better than I expected. I've noticed a few minor annoyances, which I'll make separate threads about.

Graphics / gaming is insanely smooth
Touchpad is silky smooth and multi-touch
    Webcam works perfectly
    Laptop sleeps and wakes successfully
Brightness, keyboard brightness, and volume control working out of the box
    Sound is beautiful

Black Artifacting if windows are opened when sleeping
Running Hot / Low battery (EDIT: mostly resolved, see thread)
Uchroma third-party Razer driver doesn't recognize Razer Blade Pro, so I can't adjust keyboard lbehavior

  15. Nice! I'll be trying debian /gnome 3 later this week with 4.11 kernel. What nvidia driver are you using, the nvidia one or the open source one?
  16. nVidia 375.66. Elementary OS installs it pretty much automatically.
