As posted in another thread... yes it is upgradeable!
It seems upgradeable but you guys should think about warranty.
i would personally be too scared to upgrade it
Sadly the SSD pricing is overpriced compared others and a massive shame for not letting us upgrade the RAM / SSD w/o voiding the warranty.
Has anyone successfully upgraded the SSD yet? Will the Samsung 950 M/.2 drive work? http://amzn.to/1SB99N5
Yes the 950 EVO will work if you are talking about the Blade Stealth. The Blade 14 2015 will however not support it, which makes me sad because I wanted to upgrade mine. But be careful, you will be voiding the warranty!
Sweet I got the EVO coming in today. Will let everyone know how well it works!
I hope this isn't too late, but I think you are talking about the Blade Stealth. In this case, if you are willing to spend the extra money, I would recommend the 950 PRO. The Blade Stealth supports this kind of drive and you will notice a huge difference in speed due to the drive being NVMe. The 950 EVO is limited by SATA so your read speeds will be cut nearly in half but your write speeds will improve quite a bit.
- 950 EVO
- Much slower read speeds than what you have
- Much higher write speeds than what you have
- 950 PRO
- Much higher read speeds than what you have
- Much higher write speeds than what you have
- Much faster access speeds than what you have
- Overall just better
Basically, I screwed up and I truly apologize. The 950 EVO will work but it won't give you any real benefits. I recommend the 950 PRO. The EVO works on the Blade 14 but the PRO does not and for the Blade Stealth, both work.
You are absolutely right. I meant I ordered the 950 PRO for my Stealth. Thanks!!!
That's great news! No problem!
I am happy to report that I have successfully replaced the stock 256GB PM951 drive with the 512GB Samsung 950 PRO using the steps below taken from the Notebook Review forums here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...-review-swapping-instructions-cloning.771316/
Before you start, just remember that opening the bottom panel to access the hard drive may VOID YOUR WARRANTY so please do this at your own risk. You are going to need a Torx 5 screwdriver and the set I used can be purchased here from Amazon: http://amzn.to/1SYcbZO
The Samsung 950 PRO can be purchased here: http://amzn.to/1SYcjIU
How I cloned to these drives:
Use Macrium to create WinPE bootable recovery USB key flash drive.
Use Macrium to create a FULL PARTITION BACKUP of your Blade's original drive onto an external USB drive that can hold it.
Put the new empty drive in the blade, as above.
Boot the Macrium WinPE USB key: (hold F12 on boot when prompted to choose boot drive)
Select "Restore", Choose the backup file on the USB drive from step 2.
Choose the empty drive you installed in the Razer as the destination.
Restore away, will take some time depending on the speed of your USB drive.
Power down, disconnect all the USB stuff and try to boot.
If it works, YAY, if it doesn't.. I had to do this other stuff as well...
Reconnect your Macrium USB recovery KEY, boot from that again, this time without the old drive connected over USB
Attempt to fix the Windows boot problems again (same menu option). This time, it should actually work with all green checks.
Try to boot again, should work this time.
Thanks @mario64, they had to use AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard Edition 5.6 to extend the new partition to the full free space of the drive.
Things to note:
Macium reflex makes backup and restore incredibly easy. It will back up all the partitions, INCLUDING a PERFECT copy of the Recovery partition on the stock drive
When booting into the Macrium WinPE USB drive, the mouse for some reason doesn't work. You will need to do everything on the touch screen. Don't worry! It is touch friendly!!!
After successfully restoring, you will notice that your new drive will have only 256GB instead of 512GB... Don't worry! Follow Step 13 above to fix that! Just Merge the partitions using the Partition Assistant Software!
New drive is screaming fast!
Awesome! Thanks for the walk through on how to upgrade the stealths drives. Really useful to know how to replace your own drives and DIY projects like this are fun. When I get a stealth this is something I'll plan on trying out. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge!
Congrats! Thanks for the step by step instructions, I'm sure many users will benefit from this. I'm glad everything worked out!
Thanks for this post! I just ordered my Blade Stealth, as well as a 950 PRO and Intel 8260NGW wireless module to replace the stock Killer 1535.
Do you notice any heat or thermal throttling issues with the 950 PRO? What about PCIe Active State Power Management (ASPM) support in the BIOS/UEFI?
Intel 8260NGW: http://amzn.com/B016D7YB94
No issues so far with the 950 PRO (knock on wood)
have you tested the recovery partition? I attempted this with Acronis but no luck in getting the recovery working properly it just breaks my system software wise
I just tried the recovery partition and it launched just fine. I used Macrium Reflex.
I can launch the recovery partition but if I attempt to initiate the recovery it completes too fast and breaks the system
Plan B: Ask Razer for the recovery partition on a USB drive
Already Tried that, apparently those havent been made yet
