Alright, so I'm saving up for a core and before I make any final setup plans on my already pretty crowed desk, there were a few questions I was hoping to get some answers for. First. how long is the cable and are there 3rd party options? I heard the cable is short, but idk how short and couldn't find and answers on replacements. Next, not really core related but still involves it. Are there and good USB C expansion dongles and good external SSD's to go with it? I have the og base blade stealth so I only have 128 total and only about 20 something gb left and I want to be able to use the blade as my main computer for gaming. I've been looking at the Samsung T3 drive, but that's pretty expensive. I'd prefer something over 256 gb minimum but not to crazy expensive. I want to be able to store games like CS:GO, Fallout New Vegas, and some other pretty big games, and idk how fast those drives are but I'm hoping I can open them from the drive without having to fully install them to my blade every time. lmk if you have and suggestions on this, thanks!:)

The included active (40Gbps) Thunderbolt 3/USB-C cable is only half a meter (1.5') long, and longer lengths were not available when I got my Core in May (passive cables are available, but they halve the bandwidth to the GPU).

It looks like longer active cables are available now, here's a Cable Matters brand one, in 3.3', 4.9', 6.6' lengths: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01H5QF1GO

Your sole USB-C port is going to be used for the Core, which has six USB 3.0 ports on it. The Core is your expansion dongle.

I run all my games from a USB 3.0 SSD on an early-2016 Blade Stealth. I did get the 500GB Samsung T3. (I'm actually running it from an Anker 7-port USB 3.0 hub rather than off the Core.) I got it because of The Wirecutter's review, but if you look at prices, any well-reviewed SATA 500GB SSD + external chassis is going to come out to pretty much the same price as the T3.

Alright, thanks for the answer, but what I'm still wondering is with the SSD, do you have to download the games to the blade very time you want to play one or can you just open them from the drive, and USB C speeds are faster than USB 3.0, but if it doesn't matter for this, then maybe a 3.0 drive would be better.

You can configure Steam to use your external drive to store and play your games. I don't think it would slow down your system too much. I can recommend those Samsung T3 drives: I owe 2 of them (one for storage and the other for running Linux of).

Also: USB-C is not necessarily faster than USB 3.0. USB type C is just the shape of connector and not the speed. It can be found on USB 2.0, 3.0 and 3.1 devices.

Thank you so much for this TB3 cable link! I didn't know it existed, and this changes a lot of things for me. It'll allow me to keep my blade on my desk, while my work stealth can be docked elsewhere with both being able to utilize the core without too much trouble. Totally a game changer for me, and thanks again!
