Should the Razer Phone 3 wait for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865?

Userlevel 7
Do you guys think that Razer should wait until the Snapdragon 865 comes out before releasing the Razer Phone 3? From what I can tell, one of the problems with the Razer Phone lineup is that they are released during the end of the year when the current processor is about to be replaced by the new one so the hardware in it becomes outdated in around 3 months. Another problem is that releasing the phone in Q4 means competition with the Apple iPhone and Google Pixel phones. Apple fans will stay with Apple while Google Pixel has the latest Android software and timely updates to justify the late release date.

Releasing the Razer Phone 3 with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ late in the year also appears to be a bit late since the Asus ROG Phone II just came out and those wanting to buy a gaming phone are likely to have already bought this phone before the Razer Phone 3 will come out. From what I remember, somebody from Razer mentioned mobile gaming to be hindered by software and not hardware but the Asus ROG Phone II apparently proved that there can be a lot of improvements on the hardware side of gaming phones so I believe that the Razer Phone 3 will be outclassed if its only improvements are on the software side of things. Also, the Asus ROG Phone II has a headphone jack and adopted stock Android OS.

I think that the next Razer Phone should come out in early 2020 to take advantage of the new processor and the 5G improvements. This way Razer can be ahead of its competitors. Why buy an Asus ROG Phone III when you already bought a Razer Phone 3 earlier in the year?

Yea... Just watched the Asus ROG Phone II unboxing video. They really did a good job on that phone, 120hz AMOLED, 6000 mAh battery, headphone jack, etc. Razer definitely needs to use the newer hardwares.

Hoping that they won't cancel the RP3, still.
I think Razer is done with mobile. They just couldn't do it right and even abandoned the portfolio they had. It will be a miracle if they are working on something new.
I have the RP2 and have had it since launch.

They pretty much improved everything i wanted them to from the RP1.

Now that i have seen the ROG 2 however - i want that - because the only thing majorly "wrong" with the RP2 is the LCD screen. It doesnt scream premium and the colours are not vibrant.

However, what i am going to do is wait and see what Razer come up with first before i jump in. I have a feeling the ROG 2 will be around £1k so hopefully by the time i find out what the RP3 will be then that will come down in price also.

I am also very happy with the RP2 for now - its the fastest phone i have ever owned and very rarely do i have to reboot it for any reason.

If you already own the Razer Phone 2 then I suggest waiting it out for the year after. The phone should still be really good one year in and 2020 phones will feature the Snapdragon 865 which has an integrated 5G modem and better 5G capabilities. Meanwhile, my phone is a Google Nexus 6P which has 2015 specs so I'm way due for an update.

The Razer Phone 2 is also using 2018 specs while the Asus ROG Phone II is using 2019 specs which is not a fair comparison. If Razer can deliver a good 5G compatible phone with the Razer Phone 3 in 2020 before the Asus ROG Phone III comes out then that could be my next phone purchase. The biggest thing about the Asus ROG Phone II that really took my attention away from the Razer Phone is the headphone jack, the 120Hz AMOLED display, and that they now have the option of having stock Android OS.

If Razer can deliver these then that's where my money goes. In the meantime, I'm holding off because of 5G.

P.S.
The lack of security updates for Razer Phone 1 that many are complaining about is a really bad look for Razer and shows the potential of future devices being poorly supported. Another reason why people are looking into the Asus ROG Phone II.

Hey buddy - you have echoed my thoughts exactly.

I am a tech fiend - and do get excited and simply purchase stuff on a whim - however i am gonna use all my will power and hold out just like you say.

I run my own IT busienss and the RP2 simply is so fast and 100% does what i need it to do. It also looks great - especially next to my Stealth lol.

The AMOLED display is the main draw of the ROG 2 for me - i am not bothered about the headphone jack as all my headphones are BT ones.

it is true that the main problem for mobile gaming lies in the software. You can throw as many hardware as you want on something but this is more likely a bandage on your wound, it would just hide the problem.

i think that they focus on the underlying system to handle project linda.
But project linda comes with one main problem:
The laptop needs synapse support but the system should run on the phone wich means you need a windows system on the phone cause synapse is only developed officially for windows.

Now comes the real problem, android devices are based on linux, using a smaller windows is possible but this would require to boot at first the windows system which would emulate the android. This is not performant and would destroy the idea of a mobile gaming device.

So to deal with it, they need to bring synapse to linux but linux isn't a gaming platform. The next question is, why should you buy a laptop that is effectivly just an extended monitor and power source that run your underlying linux that can't be used for games?
We have now a stalement: Using windows as the base system would decrease the android performance and would it make unusable or using linux which can't be used for the most games and would destroy the idea of a gaming device.

I think they will install a windows inside the laptop that uses the phone as a processor. This can't be handled efficient without a cable connection as seen in the video.
I could write far more ideas but what you should not forget, Razer does not want to create a mobile gaming device, he will turn it with project linda to the next level.
I do not understand the obsession with 5G. I don't know about you guys, but I buy a phone to use right now - not for compatibility with an unstable, unavailable tech still in its infancy that I won't be able to use probably for 2 years or more.

hm, that's a nice point. Here in germany is LTE nothing self-explanatory which means that 5G will be limited in the center of a few cities only.
Not that noone really needs this stuff but it will be instantly overloaded and throttled for non-business users. I am sure that germany isn't the only country with this problem.
The most people forget that they need not just a phone with 5G support, they also need a seller that supports this connection at the current location plus the phone will have an increased heat formation.

Have you read any of the answers above?
Have you any reasons for your opinion?
Have you read the topic?

It does not really make sense to argue with you here if you weren't able to understand how a forum works.

Hey man, i am sorry. I did not know that you are not able to read text that has more than 5 lines.
Do you really think that a forum is the right place for you? You should probably go to facebook or take a look on 9gag.com, this may be a more suitable site for your IQ.

well mr genius .congrats on developing a new IQ measurement method. However if you are allowed to post in this forum it means there is no requirement for a minimum IQ. If you can post here everybody can post. if you are associating the IQ levels and ability to post in forums than life must be miserable for you. hey dont loose hope yet because we accept everyone in the forum.

I would give you a like if you were able to give a counterrevolutionary. But yeah, you see there is no like.

I often remembers these phrases from movies "one day you are old enough to understand" and i often want to say this, but the truth is that your intelligence will not raise with your age, so if you thought "Hey now i am able to say something with a minimum of logic to hold my pride" let me set things right:
You don't need to try to give me an answer, noone who really understands this tragedy will stay on your side.

We have allready compromised this thread to much and to be not to respectless i will report our conversation next time if i see again such a brainshit of you, if it were not allready done.

Let's try to keep it civil here everyone. This is meant to be a healthy discussion with how Razer could approach their mobile project rather than petty squabbling. Let's try not to derail this thread and attract the attention of the moderators.
IMO razer should not continue with the phone market. Its too hard to compete against the other mobile tech giants with probably better software development than razer.

In this niche market, the main competitor to the Razer Phone is really just the ROG Phone. Those who aren't interested in gaming phones are likely to just buy the products from mobile tech giant.

They also did a great job with Razer Phone 2 and it was considered by many to be the most improved phone when compared to its predecessor. One can only wonder how much they can improve with the Razer Phone 3.

When it came to software, Razer did flop when it came to timely updates on the Razer Phone 1 so that makes upcoming phones a bit sketchy.

But either way, the Razer Phone lineup fulfilled what it was meant to do and that was to create a category of phones meant for the gaming audience. The only thing that does bother me is the lack of understanding that most gamers, and audiophiles for that matter, prefer wired headphones since it brings the best audio quality.

Do I understand correctly that no Razer Phone 3 is coming? At the beginning of the year you could read that the division is not being continued, then again a few weeks ago, that a Phone 3 is coming. Is there any news here?
Would have liked to buy the Phone 3 or exchange it for my S10 Plus. But a Phone 2 no longer makes any sense in terms of hardware.

They stopped working on the mobile project because there aren't hardware to deliver something new and innovative. Razer don't won't to be the company that presents every year a new phone phone just to let the kids say they have the newest, this role goes to apple.

As i mentioned some posts before i think they will focus on project linda with their new phone 3.

And just to compare the hardware of the phones is not the key. It looks like the Razer Phone is the only one that really gives you the power of it.
Ja das hatte ich befürchtet. Nur schade drum. Design und Hardware haben wirklich was her gemacht. Würde mich dennoch freuen, wenn sie es nicht auf Eis legen, sondern da was schönes zaubern könnten.

Yes, I feared that. Just a pity. Design and hardware really did something. I would still be happy if they couldn't put it on ice, but conjure up something beautiful.
If only Razer enabled LDAC and AptX bluetooth codecs in Pie... I would be a happy man; would forget about missing videocalls (ViLTE). I had both in LG G6, still missing it for the two features...
And the 2x camera bisbehaving when switched to 16:9 frame.
