Synapse 3 fails to start

    Synapse 3 suddenly fails to start, despite complete uninstall and reinstall.

    The Windows 10 event log contains this message:

    Antivirus: Avast Internet Security (paid)

    The error occurred after installation of a suggested upgrade failed once.

    Troubleshooting steps tried so far:
    * complete uninstall and reinstall of Synapse software and drivers (via "Apps and Features" control panel and device manager)
    * Completely disconnecting keyboard for a couple of minutes after driver uninstall

    check the task manager under "Startup" tab
