    Hey Insiders,

For December’s edition of What’s in Your Bag? we chat with Insider user Jeremy "@ThirdDegreePun” Burns. He’s a video game music composer and has recently released his first game soundtrack on steam.

Tell us more about yourself! What do you do for a living? What do you do for fun? A fun fact?

I’m a freelance Composer and Sound Designer with a Bachelor of Arts/Games. I’m still pretty fresh, but I have worked on a couple of games which are out on various platforms, including iOS, Steam and recently, the Nintendo Switch. When I’m not using my Blade to write tunes in FL Studio or mash noises together in Adobe Audition, you’ll find me playing Overwatch, Terraria, Star Wars Battlefront II, or games on PC, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch.

A fun fact: I love concocting new drinks, especially mocktails, and I drive people crazy with terrible puns.

    What’s in your bag?

I prefer traveling light and the Razer Blade is necessary for work and play. I keep a spare power adapter in there just in case. I’ve got a Novation Launchkey Mini to help me make notes (hah) on the go, and I also take my Razer Leviathan Mini because it gives a bit of extra oomph in a small form factor, to demonstrate what I’ve been working on for others. Finally, I have a pair of Sennheiser earphones during my travels.

What’s a typical day like for you?

My days vary due to the nature of freelancing. Some days I’ll gear up and head into the city to talk with developers, show off what I’ve done and work out some trickier implementation of sounds and effects I want. Other days I stay at home at my kitted-out desk with all my gear, and will compose in bursts.

When I’m not working on Music and SFX I’m going for walks, hanging out with friends, playing games on one of several devices or losing hours in front of Netflix.

What’s an item you carry you cannot live without?

I have to say my Razer Blade is absolutely essential. I recently had to go without it for two weeks and it almost killed me. I use it for so much of what I do; in work, hobbies and free time, and it handles everything I throw at it.

Is there anything you would like to say to the community?

It’s always great to talk and see such passion here on Insider. I remember when I was first thinking of getting my Blade and signed up here, I was blown away at how friendly, knowledgeable and interesting you guys are. Thanks for being so helpful and welcoming, especially the staff and moderators!

Glad hes not as Razer biased as we thought. Sennheiser > Razer anyday.

Thanks! It's a cool little device that makes it a lot easier to show off instruments or more efficiently write music on the go.

Heh, have I developed a rep for being biased now? :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: Those Sennheisers aren't actually that good. The problem with earphones is it's uh, not exactly easy to try them out, you kinda just have to trust other people's opinions when you buy and hope for the best...

I'm looking into trying out the Razer Thresher as it's been getting phenomenal reviews and has been designed with the guys at THX. Audio hasn't been that much of a strong suit for Razer but thanks to that acquisition they're now producing some really decent stuff.

Hey thanks! It's not quite as clean as it could be, but it gets the job done hahaha. Clearly I need a Firefly to maximise the Chroma ;) And it IS the season of getting gifts....perhaps I'll be getting one...'presently' ;)

Yeah, I invested in a basic Launchpad myself but I rarely ever got to use it for music related stuff, im just not that creative but I found some other uses for it, works pretty nicely with verilog to test micro-controllers though.

And for the Sennheiser, for music production you should invest in some good in ear monitors, Razer sound is always colored with an emphasis on bass. Shure audio is pricey but they are as reference as one can get, so your music will always be neutral. The THX certification is just for show, Razer only acquired THX to slap on the label, that isnt a certificate of merit in terms of audio quality.

Yeah I agree. I actually have my eye on a pair of Audio Technicas but like it's also good to have a range of devices. When I'm writing my music I try and swap between different speakers, headphones, earphones and everything to try and see how it sounds across the range of devices others could, and unfortunately will be using :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye: I'm still learning when it comes to mixing and mastering but I like to think I'm getting better haha.

Yeah the THX is just a sticker in some cases, but they also have some decent stuff there too. Either way getting them involved is an important step up.

Thanks! Yeah it's modest...for now ;) My Razer collection has been slowly but surely growing...first it was the laptops, then the keyboards were too pretty and I fell in love with an Ornata when I tried one out...and yeah...it's all downhill from there.
