Razer Blade 14 2021: Charger Problem

Hi,

I’m experiencing problems with the 230W charger that came with my laptop. Issue started out with the charge being dropped during high load situations (GPU power draw would suddenly drop), but would be fixed by restarting.

Recently, it’s becoming more frequent and now restarts don’t fix the issue.

Some more information:

  • Battery charges for a few seconds after plugging the charger into the laptop, cycles a few times, then stops charging
  • Leaving the charger plugged into the laptop, then plugging and unplugging the charger from the wall does NOT trigger the behavior described above (battery does not charge at all)
  • The battery charges properly via USBC PD with no issues.

Would like to ask for your help since it doesn’t seem like there are any Razer stores/support where I’m at (Sydney) so I can test other chargers. Thanks!

I’m having a very similar charging problem but I truly think it’s the computer port on my laptop. I will be taking it to a repair shop and hopefully they’ll be able to diagnose the problem. Is your computer still within the 1 year purchase/limited warranty?

Hey, I unfortunately am not within the warranty period. I bit the bullet and ordered a new 230W charger to test out. It charged from 50% to full without disconnecting BUT immediately started cycling once I hit full charge. I was also charging while running the Heaven benchmark to see if it was load that was tripping the charge. I also put power balance and performance settings to high. There were no breaks in the charge up until the battery hit full charge.

I also noticed that even plugged in and with the Blade recognizing it was plugged in, the system was not delivering full wattage to the GPU. I was hitting a max of 50w on the GPU which halved my benchmark scores compared to my regular scores.

My guess is:

  • It’s an issue with the charger AND battery. Almost definitely not a physical issue with the charging port itself.
  • It’s an issue with the logic board, which would be much more expensive, if not impossible to have serviced.

For Razer’s sake and mine, I hope it’s the first. I still have to get the proper screwdriver head so I can open up the chassis and test the system without the batteries. I really really love this laptop but would be properly put off if it was a major hardware malfunction. I’ve been taking extreme care of my system, I even set most of my temperature limits to <75c, as well as ran the system in a room with low ambient temp + always ran it on a laptop stand + cooler.
