Razer Blade 14 (2024) - External display not working over USB-C

Problem: External displays have suddenly stopped working (Displayport over USB-C).

I have a Razer Blade 14 (2024) with all the latest drivers installed:

  • BIOS: Razer 1.06
  • Ryzen 9 8945 HS, Radeon 780M (Adrenalin 24.12.1)
  • NVIDIA RTX 4070 (Studio Driver 566.36)
  • Win 11 (10.0.22631 Build 22631)

External displays (both at home and at work) have stopped working randomly the last year, but the frequency has increased lately.

Charging and ethernet over USB-C works fine on both the left and right port, it’s just Displayport-over-USB-C that is very flaky.

… I have tried:

  • Updating Windows
  • Updating Razer Synapse
  • Updating BIOS version
  • Updating BIOS settings
    • “Enable USB charging”: “No” -> “Auto mode”
    • Switched GPU mode from “NVIDIA Optimus” to “Dedicated Only”, and vice versa
  • Updating drivers for both GPUs
  • Tried the “stable” non-gamer variants of GPU drivers
  • “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth” and “sfc /scannow“
  • Restarting multiple times in a row(“soft” and “hard” (hold power button down until the power LED flashes white))

I have not found any consistent patterns for when external displays stop working and what makes them start working again.

Update:
I was able to connect to my external monitor (Samsung C49G95T) more reliably once I turned down the laptop display refresh rate from 240 Hz to 60 Hz in Razer Synapse.

I am now able to run 5120 x 1440 x 10 bit HDR @ 120Hz over DP (iGPU). The monitor supports up to 240Hz, but when I try it the screen glitches horribly. I have also tried to connect with a HDMI 2.1 cable, but unfortunately the C49G95T is limited to 60Hz over HDMI 😞

I did look into active HDMI → DP adapters, but I could not find any with better specs than 4K@60Hz. I also looked at KVM switches, and they might get me to 120Hz. But I have yet to find an option that unleashes the full potential of this laptop and monitor combo (5120 x 1440 x 10 bit HDR  @ 240Hz).

It would be nice if future models of the Blade either directly connected all graphics ports to the dGPU, or allowed for more control of mapping graphics adapters to ports.
