Upgradeability of the RZR Blade Pro 17" 4K 2017 model | Razer Insider
Skip to main content
Just got a refurb Razer Blade Pro 2017 17" 4K model. Its the model with a i7 7820HK, 32 GB of RAM, two 256 nvme ssd (512 raid 0 I believe), and a geforce 1080. Clearly a steal at just under 1900 bucks.

Just wondering if anybody knows how many slots for ram and ssd the thing has, and whether Id void the warranty by opening it up and upgrading it myself.

If you work for Razer, I registered the device with the appropriate numbers and it is connected to my Razer account on synapse as well. That should help.

Ideally, Id like to upgrade both the storage and RAM.

THANKS.
Yes that’s steal price. Unfortunately SSD can you upgrade but not the RAM, on 2017 Pro 4K Ram is soldered, 32gb Dual channel I believe. It may void the warranty if on the upgrading process or use the new parts it damage your system or other parts.
No biggie.
PS...

I sortof checked the bios when I first got it. I think there are two RAM slots and two nvme slots.

Please double check that for me. Im pretty sure the bios shows me devices and not empty slots. If theres room for EXTRA hard drives or extra RAM, thats what Id wanna know.

Also... concerned about the warranty. I got a 4-yr protection plan also just in case.
Thanks yo.
One more thing, is there enough room in this device for a separate hard disk drive. Maybe a full size SATA drive. I noticed some of the other models: instead of having twin nvme drives, they have one nvme flash drive and another larger capacity drive. Is there room for another drive? Wanna know before I open it up.

Also, I went into the windows settings, computer management, and noticed that these drives are not configured in a raid formation. My assumption was twin drives, RAID 0 for twice the performance and half the boot time. My mistake. So formatting a 😨 drive gave me tons more space and I still have room for a lite Linux install (for productivity).

Still a boss go-pc.

Boot times are still fast and the thing performs like a dream. I also got a nice antivirus program to keep things running at tip-top shape.

I just want to say RAZER: you did a great job on the 2017 Blade Pro. I know I'm late.... but I basically paid half the price of what you offer on your website so it was worth the wait. Cant wait for the 2019 4K Blade Pro. Its gotta be coming. Would be worthwhile to make it a Flagship PC.

Just wanna know if theres room for an extra drive in my model.
Update:

Was messing around in the bios and configured raid 0 for the two nvme drives, not knowing it would format the drives before when saving the bios settings and booting. Lost everything.

Luckily, Windows makes it easy (from second PC) to make Windows install USB drive, so I'm back up and running within a day. Second time I had to reinstall, because first time tried to overclock RAM from 2667 MHz to 3000. Fail.

Anyway, my point is... It's worth going to raid 0 for the Blade Pro 2017 model. It's terribly fast and my games are running custom settings (basically ultra give or take) at 4K, 59 hz. (1lag frame for gsync)

Note I have a 32768mb paging file also on my raid 0 drive so this effectively gives me an extra 32 gb of ddr.

Be jealous.

Hmm ssd with thermal pad, quite thick, not sure if it’s would fit on it without problem but from the price maybe you should go with other option like 970Evo, Razer use Samsung pm951 i think on this model which is a bit slower than 970Evo and buy maybe €5 ssd thermal tape with it like the original or use old one, if it’s still sticky.

Hello Joikansai

Thank you a lot !

A question please, what is the black paper or black plastic ? it is for thermic regulation ...

It’s usually for preventing accidental short circuits by, not for thermal.

Usually it comes on default from manufacturer and old Blade like stealth use this as well in some area, but current Blade not anymore. I don’t see such cover on Amazon only electric tape for binding cables inside. Some other brands still use that cover but some users take it off, maybe because it disturbs them from accessing parts inside, and since Blade cassis is also part of cooling maybe there’s downside using that cover, the heat from parts inside isn’t being transferred well to the cassis. The important one is you know thermal condition on your Blade, I would recommend monitoring with HWinfo64 since it has sensors on mostly important parts, gpu, cpu, ssd, pch. On this model you should not push the hardware too far like overclocking etc since it’s full gtx1080 on minimum cooling room, cooling pad or laptop stand with software tweaks like cpu undervolting, Turbo boost limitation, in game FPS lock is best way to keep its lifespan longer.
