[TotW] Laptop or Tower?

Not mine, but you get the idea.

My first PC was a Gateway 2000 Holiday XL that came with a huge tower. It had 8 MB of RAM and a 1 GB hard disk drive. It was sporting a brand new Windows 95 and I was in love with the thing. Eventually I got into building my computer and for years saved up money for parts and it became one upgrade game after another.

As I got older my preferences and tastes changed. Technology got exponentially better and computers became more about work than games and I started using laptops once they got to a decent size and not the cinder blocks they used to be. This is also how I discovered Razer. They were making good looking laptops while other companies were producing textbook sized calculators and Apple was kicking everyone's asses.

Fast forward to the present. We're in the middle of a pandemic, hunkering down at home and I find myself spending a LOT more time in front of the computer and playing a lot more games and I start to entertain the idea of going back to a custom made tower. I'll always have a Blade on me, but having something a bit more powerful, robust and work-stationary sounds appealing. But if I had to choose, which would I choose?

I prefer tower, but cuz of way too much travelling I'm stuck with a laptop and overheating is always an issue :(
I wish more and more gaming laptops are made with aluminium or magnesium alloy chasis to avoid the overheating problem you would have with a plastic chasis.
And I would love if the chasis doesn't overprice the laptop, to make it outside my price range.

Nothing beats a proper gaming rig, so tower for me always.
However, if you are one of those people who can't stop gaming even when going on vacation or on a trip or on a journey to someplace, then you need a Blade.
Not the weapon of course...

Hello friends,

I love my laptop because I can use it everywhere, in my room, by the sea, with friends. It is also very economical in electricity, it is important to think about ecology.
But it lacks a lot of power, it's hard to be able to run Star Citizen or even consider streaming. :/

PC towers have the advantage of being inexpensive, customizable, to assemble it yourself (or by a computer friend lol).

Also used to have a Gateway 2000 and Sidewinder. I miss that joystick, don't know if anything more useful has been made since .

However, it has a battery, which of course not only requires more resources to manufacture, but degrades over time. In addition, you can't swap components like you can with a PC. An old laptop could be in good condition, have a perfectly working keyboard, screen and whatnot, but you'd probably need to replace the whole thing because of one or more parts no longer meeting performance requirements, for example.

You're absolutely right about the battery.
But I was mainly referring to the poor performance of CPU and GPU, it wastes a lot of energy in heat because of the peltier effect.
Laptops are fortunate to have low power consumption processors.

Truth hurts. Sadly I'm in need of a new laptop due to old un-swapable parts so I feel ya.

I've own a few laptops over time but I am and always be a Tower boy.
The possibilities are endless, it's cheaper, more durable, much more simple to maintain and quite easy to upgrade (with some limitations as time goes by).
I'm saving for my next rig and I love how I can spend ( my wife would say waste :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye_:) so much time on planing what I could put in it and how much it will cost from 450 to 1200€ and never be bored.
No laptop even customizable can make me feel like this.
My bad for english mistakes but i try my best.

A tower. That feeling of adult lego building your first rig is one of the nicest feelings you can have. It's easier to upgrade and more cost-efficient. Only thing it lacks is mobility, but unless you're always on the move I would go for a tower anytime.

I like both. I prefer a dedicated tower but being able to disconnect and take the system nearly anywhere is also super appealing.Especially when it's as powerful as a blade. Gaming on the go is great! I wish extremely powerful gaming laptops existed back in the day because it would have made lan parties much easier hahaha!

So I do love the convenience of a powerful laptop, but deep down I really prefer a dedicated rig because you have the ability to run the system at full power if you need. Storage space is also a lot more abundant. There's a joy you get from starting a build from scratch. Especially if you're into case modding, putting tons of hard work customizing a rig to your exact specifications and look just can't be obtained with most portables.

Laptop for me definitely. Despite laptop being more expensive for same performance, this is less of a deal for me than being able to take my gaming computer with me when I travel.

This is the same reason why the only console that I have is the Switch. 🙂
