Razer 17 Pro RAM upgrade - HyperX Impact 3200mhz XMP DOES WORK - Don't buy CRUCIAL!

Userlevel 3
Folks, I've been scratching my head, headbutting walls and keyboard-stamping at Crucial via Twitter because they advertise their 3200 Ballistix ram as "100% compatible" with the Razer 17 Pro and yet since installing it, my machine was hanging and also refused to use the XMP profile. Their ram is clearly not XMP certified (despite their claims of 100% compatibility) and I recommend that you all avoid it.

IN SUMMARY - DO NOT BUY CRUCIAL RAM FOR YOUR RAZER MACHINE

I swapped their horrible customer service and SO-DIMMS for Kingston HyperX Impact 3200mhz, installed it this morning and IMMEDIATELY the machine is running the chips at 3200mhz, the XMP profile even automatically selected itself in BIOS so I didn't need to change a thing.

IN SUMMARY: HYPERX IMPACT CL20 3200MHZ WORKS PERFECTLY IN THE RAZER 17 PRO 2020 in XMP MODE (default profile)

Just to help others, this is the one that I bought: https://amzn.to/33DI9ag

The machine doesn't hang, boots perfectly and I now have 64Gb in my machine!! Just to add as well, there weren't multiple reboot cycles after installing, it just worked immediately.

There are a number of threads on this forum relating to upgrades and it isn't at all clear which have a successful result, and that's why I have posted this as a new topic, to hopefully help those desperately searching for the right RAM updates for their Razer 17 Pro (2020).

Just to also add, I benchmarked the machine stock (16Gb factory RAM), with the Crucial ram and also with the HyperX, here are the results:

But in summary, this benchmark shows the Crucial ram to be running at far lesser performance than the HyperX.

Any news? what's stable? I am trying to upgrade to 32gb ram (16x2). should I go for 2933?

I'm still running the HyperX 2933 (64Gb) but at the XMP profile for 2666 as it's the only profile which runs with stability and doesn't hang. Running in the default XMP profile 2933 leads to regular crashing while gaming.

So should I get the 2666 then? Or does it not worth upgrading from 16gb 2933 to 32gb 2666?

Buyers risk but it is worth it

How can we answer that for you? Do you need more RAM or not?

From the beginning, this forum has been about searching for a compatible / working 64GB RAM upgrade.

32GB capacity has been achieved, but 64GB is a challenge

this is good to know, but I think you can see from some other threads that there are people who have problems with 64GB (2x32) of the same brand/"type" of RAM that other people have no problems at 32GB (2x16) though, i.e. just because 32GB of a particular RAM works doesn't mean that 64 will work, even though officially the razer blade supports up to 64GB

I don't know if it's an issue with the RAM or if it's with Razer blades

Well I'm asking if it'd be worth it,

It has been good, never got past 50% utilization even in games (only during stress test)

Got it as it has a faster CL timing (CL 17)

You will need 64 only if you are doing a lot of productivity work...Gaming, 32GB is more than enough.

I game... 🙂

I'll mainly be doing video editing and graphic stuff also gaming too but 32gb should be enough anyways, thank you so much tho! I literally just ordered mine wanted to figure out the ran situation before hand, I got the 4k 120 version, how are you liking yours?

Got the 1080P 300Hz, 2070 Max-Q... gamingwise very satisfied
guys, check out this post on another thread:

I'm stuck here... should I get 32GB of 2933Hz or 64GB of 2933Hz and run at 2666Hz? Is there much of a difference between running ram at 2933Hz or 2666Hz?
I need to upgrade to 64GB - the amount of video editing I am doing now 32GB just isn't cutting it on this thing. I previously tried the impact @ 3200mhz, right about when the 1.06 bios update came out. That did not work at all, even with the lower mhz xmp profile. I am taking another stab at this months later. BTW, I have been going BACK AND FORTH with RAZER via email. I have argued until I am blue in the face that NOONE has been able to get 64gb ram @ 2933 mhz working with this machine. I will post the email chain at some point. THEY ARE ADAMANT - I AM TELLING YOU - ABSOLUTELY UNWAIVERING - That 64GB @ 2933mhz will work with this machine. They have said it over, and over, and over again. But they are equally as adamant about NOT RECOMMENDING any specific vendor. They are STRICTLY not allowed to recommend a specific ram. BUT IT ABSOLUTELY WORKS with 64GB and 2933MHZ. We are on email back and forth round #10 at this point. So I am giving this another run with Corsair 64GB @2933. The CAS is lower on the corsair, VS the Mushkin ($100 cheaper) which I am going to give a try with if the Corsair does not work. Corsair was gotten off Newegg, Mushkin is available on Amazon. It is imperative that I get this working with 64GB, so I will be making my rounds on these ram manufacturers. And if none of them work, my lawyer will do the rest of the legwork.
posting for updates
I am happy to report the Corsair ram does indeed work! 64GB @ 2933mhz .. I have had no hang ups, blue screens, etc, even when working heavily in Adobe and gaming for long periods ... Neither have been problems.

Could you link the ram that is working for you? I can only find corsair ram at 2666mhz
Sorry for the late reply!! Here's what I got.

CORSAIR Vengeance 64GB (2 x 32GB) 260-Pin DDR4 SO-DIMM DDR4 2933 (PC4 23400) Laptop Memory Model CMSX64GX4M2A2933C19

Got it off Newegg. Zero complaints, STILL. No hangups, crashes, etc. Go for this, but shop a bit because I paid $319 and Newegg now shows it for $389.
