As a hobbyist, I stumbled upon a fantastic little device called a BRCK from Kenya. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1776324009/brck-your-backup-generator-for-the-internet It was a genius concept but was exectuted and implemented poorly. They never made use of the secondary internal modem and never actually made the device 100 percent open source.
