What’s the best way to improve Wi-Fi for a gaming setup?

I’m trying to sort out a Wi-Fi issue at home and could use some advice from people who actually game regularly.

My setup is fine when I’m close to the router, but the connection gets less reliable when I’m in another room. I’ve been looking at mesh Wi-Fi, but I’m not sure if that’s the right solution or if I should be looking at something else first.

I’ve worked around a few Wi-Fi setups with Borderless Solutions, but I’d still like to hear from gamers who have dealt with this themselves.

Would you go with a mesh system, Ethernet, or something else for a gaming setup?

2.4GHz or 5GHz?

2.4GHz have better range, wall penetration, but it’s more prone to interference, than 5GHz. On the other side 5GHz has lower range, also looses signal faster, than 2.4GHz.

It’s hard to recommend some ultimate solution, because every environment is different, especially for WiFi signal. For eg. you can try different 2.4GHz channels (but it really depends how “congested” your environment). Also be aware, that other USB 3.0 devices can make interference with 2.4GHz signal (great article by Intel): https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/content-details/841692/usb-3-0-radio-frequency-interference-impact-on-2-4-ghz-wireless-devices-white-paper.html

I’m a fan of UniFi products (they have a bunch of access points / routers with AP - that you can connect together, mesh etc, and they’re fairly easy to setup).
