Windows 10 1903 Breaks the eGPU (Core X Chroma)

I have a Razer Blade Stealth 13.3" (New Graphics Model) Thin and Light Laptop - Slim Bezel 4K Touchscreen - NVIDIA GeForce MX150 - Intel Core i7-8565U - 16GB RAM.

After I updated to Windows 10 1903 (10.0.18362.175) the RADEON VII in my Core X Chrome will not work anymore. In the Device Manager, it now says "This device cannot find enough free resources..(12)" "If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system"

I tried to disable the onboard MX150 and rebooted but the same error comes up.
I tried uninstalling both eGPU (RADEON VII) and NVIDIA software and drivers and downloaded the latest from their site and reinstalled after a reboot but the same issue comes back.

Any suggestions?

The USB ports and NIC still work. The Core X Chroma is still recognized as normal in the Razer software. The only part that does not work is the RADEON VII Card. The Card and eGPU work fine on my MacBook Pro.

I didn't test that. Only the eGPU with an external monitor.
My issue is related to Windows 10 1903 update.

Hi @iPader! You have a peculiar Razer Core X concern. By the way, does your Razer Blade Stealth 13.3 still have sufficient hard drive space? You AMD Radeon VII is a qualified graphics chipset, so it should not give you any issue while using it. Just to confirm, your Razer Core X works normally before the Windows 10 1903 (10.0.18362.175) update, is that correct? Also, have you tried reverting your laptop to an earlier build/update?
Yes, over 200GB free. Yes, it worked fine before the update. I am unable to revert to pre-1093. It's a new version and took a long time to install. There's no revert function in Windows Update.

I have an open ticket with Razer support but they are escalating to engineers. I tried everything they suggested. Nothing has worked so far.

Thanks for sharing, @iPader. Have you tried going to a previous System Restore point in your PC before Windows 1903 update? It's good to know that this been escalated to our Support Team. Please send me a PM together with your case ID so we can check its progress.

I've tried to restore, but it didn't work.

The support team has not been helpful. They want me to mail the Core X Chroma, Video Card (RADEON VII) and the Razer Blade Stealth back to them for troubleshooting. I didn't have a box to ship back so they suggested I buy one from FedEx.

The last email asked me to re-format the system back to the factory and test again. I did that and have the same problem. Here's my last email to them.

  • The Razer Synapse I uninstalled was v. 3.4.0604060316 (which used to work just fine)
  • The link you send was for Mac Synapse v2.somthing. I had to navigate back to get to the Windows v2 "PC - V2.21.18.115 (PC 64-bit only)(Click for details) "
  • The installation of .NET did not work. Here's the error message: "Details - Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 is already a part of this operating system. You do not need to install the .NET Framework 4.5 redistributable. Same or higher version of .NET Framework 4.5 has already been installed on this computer."
  • I did get a note in Windows notifications saying that the .NET Native Framework Package 2.1 just got installed (automatically)
  • Ran Windows 10 updates and it updated some Razer software "HIDClass" (twice) and "Razer Device

Bottom line is it is still not working. Are you sure this is not related to the latest version of Windows 1903 v10.0.18362.175?

AND

Since my last report. I have done the following with little success.

1. Full reset of Razer back to factory settings. TESTED with Core X Chroma - FAILED
2. Installed the latest Windows 10 updates. TESTED with Core X Chroma - FAILED
3. Installed the Razer Synapse software. TESTED with Core X Chroma - FAILED
4. Installed the Intel Drivers updater and updated. TESTED with Core X Chroma - FAILED
5. Installed the RADEON VII driver from AMD website. v19.6.2 (released on June 24, 2019) TESTED with Core X Chroma - FAILED

Tested the Chroma with an external monitor on my MacBook Pro 13" using Geekbench and that seems to work just fine. No errors and the speed was very good.
Tested with Firewatch game from Steam. Also was very fast.

Do you think the problem is the Stealth laptop? You guys just sent me this as a replacement a few months ago.
Maybe we should try another Blade Stealth on this eGPU or I can just send this back and you guys test it?

Let me know what you think.
Can I tell you that with my 2019 Razer 15 with RTX 2080, I get nothing but a BSOD WDF Violation error even after I have wiped the machine and have noting but Windows 10 on it! I have even disconnect any external devices and still get the error.

At this point after multiple attempts I give up on 1903 for the time being on my Razer 15

Hey there! That is troublesome. What Razer peripheral or devices were affected? Have you contacted our Support Team via email or chat? If you haven't, please send me a PM and let's continue there.
So I am looking to purchase the the core x chroma and reading this makes me a bit concerned. Is there anyone not running into this issue?
everything is fine unless you're running 1903. then it gets hairy
Ok. So kinda of limiting if I cannot move to newer OS releases. Has Razer been working on a solution? Is it just driver related or is MSFT doing something funny with TB3?
core v2 owner here. Same issue. To top it off, all recent versions of nvidia drivers state they are not compatible with the Windows version 1903. Not Razer's issue, but I hope they are adding their voice to the chorus of people asking a SW development empire to understand SW development

Yes I clean installed Windows 10 latest version with over half the HD still empty.
Latest Update and a little history...

Let me start by saying I like Razer and always wanted to get a Razer laptop knowing how nice they look and hearing about how well they perform at a premium price.

Earlier this year I purchased a "Razer Blade Stealth 13.3" (New Graphics Model) Thin and Light Laptop - Slim Bezel 4K Touchscreen - NVIDIA GeForce MX150 - Intel Core i7-8565U - 16GB RAM" and it worked pretty well compared to my latest MacBook Pro 13" Touch Bar. Didn't seem as well made but considering Razer is much smaller than Apple, it's hard to compare Apple fit and finish to anyone out there that's trying to match that level. During a recent business trip, with both MBP and RBS in my backpack I came home to find that the screen on the RBS didn't work anymore, only would work connected to an external monitor. Maybe it was jostled around and Razer couldn't keep up like the MPB could in travel. No problem, Razer sent me a replacement and all was well.

In May I wanted to test out getting the new Core X Chroma with a RADEON VII card so I could use it with my Mac Mini, MBP or my RBS (as RADEON is all that Mac will support.) Got it all hooked up and the MBP, MMini, and RBS all worked great. Then the day Windows 10 v1903 came out it all went south and Razer had no answer other than ship it to us and we'll take a look. No phone support, no chat support, nothing. Just emails saying how to ship it back and we'll look. Needless to say, having to wipe all my settings, software, etc was a hassle but I agreed and let them take a look. They sent it back with a new motherboard and some scratches from the screwdriver they used on the bottom. I didn't like that but whatever. The problem persisted.

  • The Core X Chroma with the RADEON VII works with my MacBook Pro minus some glitches below.
  • The Core X Chroma did not work with the Razer Blade 13, then worked after I updated the BIOS to 1.06 and EC Firmware to 1.02 on July 30th. Since then, it stopped working again. Maybe another Windows update broke it??
  • The Core X Chroma is recognized in the Blade in Windows OS, but the RADEON Card will not function, although it is also recognized. Same error message as originally reported "This device cannot find enough free resources..(12)" "If you want to use this device, you will need to disable one of the other devices on this system"

It might be the Core X, since we haven’t tested that. Not sure if I need a firmware update that first and test?
Not sure how to do that since you can’t log into it directly and can't find instructions anywhere on Razer support.

Recently they had me send the Razer X Chroma (RXC) back and again it came back, "no issues found" again same problem persisted with my RBS and not working with the Radeon VII.

On top of all that, the RXC will not let you boot from Mac Mini. You have to boot with the internal video card, then disconnect and plug in the cable into the RXC after everything is up and running so that's a hassle.

Additionally, when the machine (Mac or PC) goes to sleep the RXC fan switches to super speed and stays like that until the connect machine wakes up. Also, no clue why this happens.

I'm beyond frustrated with Razer support as they don't seem to acknowledge anything and it's been four months with no resolution.

I loaded a fresh copy of 1909 - same issues couldn't get the eGPU to work.
same problems here with stealth 13 2019 and core x croma (gtx 1050ti) 😕

In fact it's really bad because as soon as I loaded the Bootcamp drivers it grabbed on to the eGPU I assume and all I got was a black screen. I had to reinstall Windows. The next time I withheld running the boot camp setup and loaded drivers from bootcampdrivers.com and then deleted the amd video drivers out of the bootcamp setup files and installed those to get drivers for the rest of the system.
