Blackwidow V3 Pro wireless doesn't work when charging from any power source with USB cable

Userlevel 1

Hi Guys,

Today I updated my blackwidow v3 pro’s framework to 3.0.x ver, and after that I found the keyboard wireless cannot work when plugin the USB cable for charging only (Both 2.4g and bluetooth).  It can work fine if pluged with a PC ( the wireless cannot work though). Unplug the cable the wireless works fine.

When plug in the usb cable (in a wall power sockect), the keybord will shutdown for a second, all lights die, then relight up slowly. At this moment only lights are up, but wireless functions are died.

Before updating the framework everything was fine (version was 2.0.x). And i also tried to reset the keybord from Synapse and Hold “ESC + Caps On + Space” method, nothing worked. Changed to other wall sockets, changed cable, nothing worked.

Need your kind help if anyone has solution or idea on this, million thanks!

Exactly the same thing has happened to me. Any idea how we can push for a proper update on it? Took me an hour to figure out what was happening

I am facing the same issue…. Kindly help

Once ajm charging other than with the connected device- color profilke and the entire keyboard stops working.

Connects back once i remove the charging cable / source.

both wireless and BT stops working while charging,….defeats the point of having a wireless keyboard

I have the exact same issue. Is there any way to recover my firmware? It is really annoying that I cannot easily switch between my laptop and desktop

I’ve not found a way to do it. I’m basically using it wired through my personal pc when that’s on (so charging it too) and then just hoping it doesn’t die when it’s unplugged to my work pc in the day.

Mental how they can essentially brick a product and there’s no new firmware update.

I was shocked when Razer told me it is designed to be that way. That I can use it wirelessly while charging is only a bug😓

Guys, I have found a way to solve the issue. It is firmware v3 that should be to blame. Get an older version, like v2.02.00_r1 and downgrade your keyboard firmware.

Here is the link:

https://dl.razerzone.com/drivers/BlackWidow%20V3%20Pro/win/BlackWidowV3Pro_KB_FirmwareUpdater_v2.02.00_r1.exe

Open the old firmware installer, unplug your keyboard, skip the receiver update, hold Fn and plug in the keyboard, and it will start updating automatically.

If this works, they really need to fix forwards and include what ever they broke which is in this version and add it to the latest firmware. Is there confirmation that they removed it on purpose?? I’m rolling back in either case.

I’m having trouble rolling it back to v2, when I told fn and plug in, the firmware updater still says ive got the latest version with v3?

  1. When it asks you to plug in the receiver, just do it. It will say you have the latest version. Before clicking next, unplug your keyboard connector.
  2. Click next, turn off you keyboard, hold Fn and plug in your keyboard connector. It will say nothing this time and begin updating automatically

Just to set your expectation, the charging cable should be connected directly to the PC you are connected via Bluetooth or 2.4Ghz. If the charging cable is connected from a different source then you cannot use the keyboard as it can be only charged.

I had this response from Razer Support. It’s expected behaviour. Terrible.

I asked a few online stores and they told me the same, which proves that recently sold batches with the latest firmware are expected to work in that way. I cannot imagine the reason why they did it. My Blackwidow has been used wirelessly while charging for 2 years. It seems no damage to my keyboard.

Spent way to much on this keyboard, for it not to charge while using it should it die in the middle of a game. Will not be recommending the product to anyone in the future if they don't get this fixed and FAST.

The worst part is that there is no reason for keyboard to not work while charging. Since it was working perfectly before the keyboard software patch. Now thanks to Razer I have ~$200 worth of a literally BRICK at my home. The worst part is I could have gotten much better wired keyboards half the price, if wanted to use a keyboard wired.

This keyboard was a substantial investment for what it is, and I had high expectations for its quality. After using it for some time, I can say it's one of the worst hardware purchases I've ever made. You can't change the colors or functions without installing their Synapse software, which I refuse to do. I consider it bloatware—over 1 gigabyte just to control keyboard colors? On my cheaper RGB keyboards, I can easily switch colors using keyboard shortcuts.

We bought three keyboards for our family, and on two of them, the volume control has already broken. This seems to be a widespread issue with these keyboards. I'd call it a serious hardware bug, likely due to dust and dirt getting in.

But the worst part, as mentioned in this thread, is you can't charge the keyboard via USB while switching between devices using the side lever, something I can do with my other wireless keyboards. I expected this to be standard.

No, I will never buy a Razer product again.

I’m having the same issue, mine doesn’t even work when connected directly to my razerblade 15 via USB. I’ve also noticed that the battery drains so much quicker since updating the firmware as well.

following this however i can, i’ve rollback back to v2, i’ve moved to the latest, i’m plugged it direct in and none of these methods work.

it seems like this charging issue has happened to a group of people within the last 2 months.

I have the same problem until now…

I faced the same issue and followed the steps above to roll back my keyboards firmware, and then I was able to charge while using 2.4ghz connector. But straight up I noticed some problems

  • the keyboard while charging and being connected to the dongle would make a very low buzzing noise, you have to be in a very quiet room to listen to it, it was midnight for me when I noticed it. From this I concluded that it is a design flaw in this keyboard that it might cause some internal damage to the circuit if used in the long run
  • secondly while charging and using the dongle I started facing double press issue, where if I typed anything example: Razer it would type as Raazzzerrr, the reason for this is that while charging and using dongle if you look at the charging indicator it would charge and disconnect for a brief second and if you happen to press any key in that exact second then I think it registers a press before disconnecting and one after reconnecting, all this happens in a split second, but another way to notice this is to have synapse open, you would notice the charging animation and whenever that animation hits 0% then there will be a double press
  • lastly another problem with downgrading firmware is that when I plug in the kb, it would charge but it would report that it is charged to about 5% to synapse and windows bluetooth menu, which again is very annoying. Since morning the charging indicator for my keyboard is at 5% but I am using it at full brightness and it has not shut down till now.

So I would say that this a design flaw from razer and instead of resolving it via a firmware update or making a recall of these keyboards they decided to disable the feature of charging while using the keyboard. This is a very shitty move tbh because the most budget wireless keyboards have this functionality, and when paying a premium to razer we expect good support from them not a vague reply saying “its designed that way”.

If it were designed not to charge while wireless is turned on then it should have been there since its release and not down the line in v3 of firmware. They definitely found the defect post release and decided to stay shut and let the consumer suffer.

If anyone who bought it recently via e commerce site then please return it if possible.

Also I am not an expert in electronics but I can say it for sure that a keyboard should not be buzzing while charging with wireless on, so anyone trying to downgrade the firmware please do it at your risk as it might damage the keyboard in long run

This is super helpful. Roll back the firmware and it’s working as before. TQ please follow the instruction carefully if it didnt work.

Thanks for clarifying. I can say this work 100%. I upgraded from 3.0.1 to 3.0.2. suprisingly buggy and no charging from a different source while using. Downgraded to v2 and it’s amazing.

Not to necro an older post but first off thank you OracleQin for your solution. Although it is a workaround in reality and sadly I’d guess the vast majority will never find it and miss out on a great feature. That should be default on a 180$+ keyboard!

Secondly Razer please take note and whether or not you feel this was a bug, it is a big QoL feature and should be added back to the firmware. I like your hardware but from my dealings with your software more focus could be directed towards it. It feels like a whole lot of bloat considering what it should be handling and then having so many issues with all that required bloat. It should run like a well oiled machine for all the processes running.

Reminds me of ASUS. Great hardware but terrible software to run it. Like Armoury Crate. Hopefully someone comes along and creates a G-Helper (very minimal impact, simple to use alternative to AC) like software for Razer if you guys can’t get it simplified and running smoothly.

Lets not forget advertising onboard memory and then requiring the use of an app and always online to use features..

Having the exact issue after updating the firmware yesterday and this old post saved my life! Thank you for the solution, and PLEASE please release a new firmware to fix this Razer. I enjoy this keyboard and want to update to the latest for best performance, but this issue is just a show stopper for me

Same issue as the rest of us, can not believe Razer is as shit a company as it is. I ABSOLUTELY HATE my Black widow V3 wireless. Constant issues. Whether it be erratic, flashing lights or dead battery out of nowhere it's literally been constant issues. I've dealt with them for so long just because I paid so much for it.

Speaking with Razer/synapse support is like talk talking to the worst AI assistant from 2010 you ever wanted to exchange words with. Boiler plate answers, making you do the same nonsense procedures, then getting nowhere with you issues. It's like they exhaust you to the point you just give up.

Thanks for this thread, I'm rolling back my firmware to be able to chargey keyboard from a USBC that isn't my PC...ya know, wirelessly.

Also worth noting that ever since the latest firmware update that nerfed the ability to charge via other sources, my keyboard charges SO SLOW that is takes upwards of 10 hours to fully charge. It's insane.

Having the same issue, unable to use keyboard while charging, slow charging, completely useless at 10% or less, wont show up in the software to see where the battery is at.  Agree, paid good money for a good keyboard with terrible software.

Thanks for all the info on how to fix this.

Same issue here.

Can anyone confirm there are issues when you downgrade to the v2 firmware?

LIke @RaajputSingh said: buzzing noise, double press issues and incorrect percentage in Synapse while charging.

Are there any other issues?

For example, the latest v3 firmware fixed a bug where the keyboard’s RGB lights won’t turn off when the PC is shut down.
