The Razer Switches Maze - How to understand them and make the right purchase decision?

Hi everyone, I was here wondering if any of you also got confused about the Razer Keyboards super extensive Switches offering.

To give you some context, my first Razer Keyboard was a Razer BlackWidow Ultimate bought in 2013,
subsequently, in 2016, my brother started gaming and I bought the newest model of the Razer BlackWidow Ultimate to gift the old one to him (I have not idea what kind of switches those keyboards had, but i liked both).

In 2021, I bought a Razer Huntsman Elite during a trip to the United Kingdom (which I just checked and it is equipped with Purple Switches). I was a fool not to think and check that it came equipped with an UK Layout rather than an US Layout - which became a problem for me.

Because of the fact that when I first purchased my first Razer BlackWidow (gaming keyboard) I was previously gaming on my old Macbook Pro keyboard, the wow effect was very intense, I went from hell to heaven and played for years with this keyboard. When I bought (upgraded?) to the Razer Huntsman Elite 2021, I didn't feel that much of difference (I kinda like it now as I got used to it, but I don't know how to compare it to the old BlackWidow ones because they saved me from laptop keyboard gaming, so I can't form a conviction about which one I like the most).

Now, I want to buy another keyboard and the Razer Line-up got me so overwhelmed and confused that I am unable to make a decision on which one would be the best fit for me.

  1. I don't care too much about incredible durability, it really doesn't make a difference to me if the keys are going to last 30 million clicks or 100 million clicks because I've used a BlackWidow Ultimate for 5 years without a single malfunction (I donated it, maybe it still works).

  2. I mainly use the keyboard to work, but I like to play Dota 2 casually, and sometimes Counter-Strike.

  3. The clicky sound from any of the Razer Keyboards I've ever owned never bothered me at all, not when I was gaming with friends for up to 6 hours straight, not when I was working typing in Word/Excel/PowerPoint for up to 10 hours straight.

  4. As a regular amateur Dota 2 player that plays a fairly decent game, sometimes I misclick and this is something that I would like to improve, maybe this is related to the actuation point but their explanations are so scientific about their technology that I was unable to understand it, is it fair to assume that if the key requires more downforce to be activated there is a relatively good chance that I do not accidentally hit an unwanted extra key when rapidly going for the key I want or when I'm about to accidentally press the wrong key I would have a little bit more time to realize that I am about to commit a mistake and pull my finger back halfway down the key before it's actually activated?

Now, the main reason I would like to buy a new keyboard right now is because of the UK Layout, I'm just tired of it, I want one with an US Layout.

So, I went to the Razer website and was facing the decision to either return to the BlackWidow family or buy another Huntsman (saw the DeathStalker line-up but also couldn't tell how do they differ from the others) They've also changed their top-of-the-line products nomenclature from Ultimate/Elite to PRO, but suddenly, beyond all that, what overwhelmed me the most and troubled me with intense doubt is this:

RAZER PURPLE ANALOG OPTICAL SWITCH GEN-2 (CLICKY)

RAZER RED ANALOG OPTICAL SWITCH GEN-2 (LINEAR)

RAZER GREEN CLICKY MECHANICAL SWITCH GEN-3 (TACTILE AND CLICKY)

RAZER YELLOW LINEAR MECHANICAL SWITCH GEN-3 (SMOOTH AND SILENT)

RAZER ORANGE TACTILE MECHANICAL SWITCH GEN-3 (TACTILE AND QUIET)

Does my currently Razer Huntsman Elite 2021 has a GEN-1 or GEN-2 purple switch? What is the difference?
Now, I also have the understanding that the model decision between a Huntsman and a BlackWidow is also tied to the decision about staying Optical or going back to Mechanical.

Can someone help me deciphering the heavy science implemented in these different switches, if possible, with the PROS and CONS of all of them?

Which one should I buy? The Razer BlackWidow V4 PRO (Green, Yellow or Orange Switch) or Razer Huntsman V3 PRO (Purple or Red Switch)? Why?

Also, I’ve heard that Razer Software is not compatible with the newest Apple Macbook Pro (Dez 2023) equipped with the M3 Max chip (MacOS Sonoma 14.4), if true, is there a reason for that and a timeline set for the software to become functional again?

Maybe we could even start a discussion about all these switches so other people can also read this topic in the future when They are in doubt too?

Thank you very much!

Hi,

I don’t think that there was 2nd gen Purple optical switch. But there was 2nd gen red switch with improved acoustics (sound dampeners).

Razer Huntsman V3 line doesn’t use Purple or Red switch - they’re using Black 2nd gen optical analog switch. The best thing with this switches is that you can adjust actuation point (force is still the same 40G, but actuation is adjustable from 0.1 to 4mm).

Synapse is not compatible with macOS unfortunately. There are some 3rd party apps like Razer macOS - but they’re mainly for controlling RGB.

The choice is up to you. I like silent, linear switches, so I’m using Blackwidow with Yellow switches at home, and Huntsman with Red switches at work.

The Gen 3 orange switches are faulty. Razer has acknowledged they have a problem with them for their 75% keyboards and are RMAing them.

I’m on my second RMA for my Blackwidow V4 Pro with orange keys. The RMA process is slow, painful, and insulting. I would avoid them.
