I'm gonna make a support ticket, but hopefully someone here can help me out.
Recently when I plug in my phone to charge it will randomly choose to not charge. I also have the RGB wireless charger and I have it set to show full RGB when it's charging and when I place the phone on the wireless charger the lights go on, but no charging.
When you pull down the top menu it shows a notification from Android for USB preferences. It shows USB controlled by connected device. Tapping it brings me into USB preferences and I can choose between 2 control options. 'Connected Device' or 'This Device'. When I choose 'This Device' option it tries and then says can't switch. If I connect to a PC nothing. Turning on dev options and debugging, nothing. Setting file transfer option in USB preferences did nothing. Very frustrating. So I did the natural solution and factory reset my phone. After re-downloading updates (pretty fast) and waiting a day or so it happened again.
Only solution thus far has been for me is to simply reset the phone. It'll usually work but I have to sometimes go back into the drop down menu and tap the usb preferences again to swap control to 'This Device' and it switches instantly. Other times after reset it just works.
So..some unusual things I noticed while trying to figure this out. Can't figure out how my wireless charger will detect the phone and act like it's going to charge but nothing is really happening. Kinda think it's an android pie issue, but not if no one else is reporting it? Another thing is once I reset my phone and everything seems to be working, I go back into USB preferences. The options for control are no longer there. There is no option for 'Connected Device' or 'This Device' it's not listed. I don't know if there is a way to force them to show up in the dev options but they don't appear automatically. Allowing for debugging only opens options for File Transfer, MIDI, USB Tethering, etc.
So give it to me strait guys..bad usb-c port? time to rma?
Edit: I tried to charge the phone while it was off to make sure the usb-c port is ok. Charges just fine..so weird.

Here's a quick video of what my phone is doing:

So annoying I am so frustrated while filming this hope you can't tell lol. Doing a search for 'Charging connected device via usb' will show others with various types of phones and versions of android having the same issue. Which pretty much seals the deal it's hardware IMO.
I'm requesting an RMA today I've been going back and forth with customer support last few days. They have been quick to respond..wonder what they will say about this video.

OK so right before I was about to send in my info to exchange my phone a friend recommended I try a more aggressive cleaning of the usb-c port of the phone. Said it's possible some kind of residue is actually on the usb-c charging tab. Like a small drop of soda or beer or even a couple bits of sand. I originally just looked around for anything in there with the sim eject tool and sprayed around in there with some compressed air. I never touched the charging tab tho. This didn't work for me.
Turned off the phone, got some 70% isopropyl alcohol, dipped one of those disposable small rubber spiked tipped flossing tools in it and cleaned the actual usb-c tab. Didn't use very much alcohol just dip the tip and shake off all the excess till it's not dripping. The flossing tool was soft enough to push against the usb-c tab without bending it. Couple sprays of compressed air and waited a minute or two before turning the phone back on.
Did this about 5 days ago and the phone has been charging perfectly. I dunno what was on there it's almost impossible to see the tab itself. I never spilled anything on the phone.
I dunno if it's safe to actually use rubbing alcohol on the charging tab, but the phone is working and hopefully this saves someone out there some time.
