What caused this issue?

In essence, I had been running my PC for 8 hours without any issues until a friend recommended that I try Razer Cortex. After running it, I launched the MW2 beta, but the game was running at a very low FPS. I turned off the Razer boost feature and tried to close the game or Battle.net launcher, but it wouldn't close. I then attempted to close all Razer software through Task Manager, but my PC froze within two seconds. I held down the power button for 5 seconds, restarted the PC, and uninstalled Razer Cortex.

My first question is: What caused this issue?

Secondly, could this have caused any permanent damage? Additionally, could holding down the power button for 5 seconds have caused any damage?
