Chroma keyboard not showing custom lighting

I got a chroma keyboard for Christmas(ornata) and I made a custom lighting for it. it looks really cool, but it only shows up when I open razer synapse, is that normal, or is there a way to do it without.

This is normal. Synapse serves as the lighting controller so the keyboard goes back to the default lighting effect if the app is not running in the background.
