Finding wolverine frustrating

Hi I am really struggling with the controller, I thought it was meant to improve speed. In particular when I am playing Sea of thieves using my raser wolverine ultimate for xbox one my pirate moves slower than my oppenent, like moving from side to side, there much faster and this makes it harder to shoot them. Any help please would be appreciated. I don't understand how to set trigger mode, would this help?? Thank you
