Free upgrade from Windows 10 to 11

Purchased the Razer Blade 15 Base with Windows 10 in early 2021.  Since then I’ve received prompts from Microsoft to update to Windows 11 and this laptop supports it, I just haven’t done it yet.  Recently I had severe Windows 10 failure (stuck in a diagnosing/restarting loop) and after many attempts to fix I finally got the laptop to reset & restore the original Windows 10 from the recovery partition and it wiped out my programs and data (I have backups).

I’m thinking now might be a good time to upgrade to Windows 11 before installing everything else, but Windows Update is only prompting me to check for Windows 11 compatibility but not letting me do the upgrade.  Any suggestions?

https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows11

Scroll down on this page until you see “Download Windows Disk Image ISO” and download the ISO file.

Using the ISO method is the safest way to deploy Windows 11 (or any other major version) as it mounts up as a Virtual DVD Drive in Explorer and uses your own local hardware to deploy the upgrade rather than using the Windows Update Service to do so. This method is what I recommend most users to do to deploy any major Windows releases since it works every time because Windows Update is wonky for deploying things, so I would prefer to use as it is the safest method to update a system to a major Windows version.

I just ran the update check from Settings and it showed the Windows 11 upgrade right away. Installed it without losing any files or settings. Definitely smoother than I expected.

When Windows Update just nags about compatibility but won’t let you upgrade, sometimes grabbing a legit windows 11 home retail license from a reliable place helped me jump-start the install without fuss. I once did a clean install after a reset wiped everything, and having that license ready made the process way smoother.
