The microphone picks up my voice at such a low rate I can barely be heard. It seems like this is a persistent shortcoming which others have noted. Am I missing something? Can this somehow be addressed?

I have the same problem. Support sent me a new Kiyo camera but I still the same problem with this second camera.
I am wondering if it could be a recent driver update. Looking at the driver of the microphone, it was recently updated in 1/29/2021 but I started having issues around 2/15, which could mean I got the driver update until February.

So, I got it working, and I might contact support about it because they didn't help me fix the issue before, maybe they can keep this trick on their bag of tricks.
Can you try disabling and enabling apps using your microphone? After I did this it started working again .
To get to that menu just search microphone in the windows menu
