Mouse scroll wheel click randomly stops working without synapse running

I was using a viper 8k the other day when clicking on the scroll wheel to ping items in game stopped working. I assumed maybe it was just getting old and had a mechanical issue, but when I started synapse software (beta) it started working again normally. I didn’t think much of it, but a few days later, using a deathadder v3 wired on the same pc, the same issue happened and was fixed by opening synapse (beta). It also happened with a viper v2 pro (on that same pc). I was going to chalk it up to synapse beta, but I just had this happen on a deathadder v2 pro on a different pc with regular non-beta synapse where the scroll wheel would not click until opening synapse. All of these mice have the latest firmware and synapse/synapse beta are always updated. Seems connected to the synapse software, which I usually only run when I need to change some configuration. Is there some kind of fix for this other than to open synapse when it occurs (and/or remap the button, and/or reset to default).

Fix!!!

I had the same issue, when I closed Synapse it would not work and register in any tests, but then in "Customize" I changed the Scroll Click from Default to Mouse Function → Scroll Click and it worked after closing Synapse. No idea to why or how it worked, but it did. Also after this change I changed it back to "Default" and it still works.

March 27 2025: Just tried this for the Viper V3 Pro + Synapse 4 and it still works.

July 27 2025. I have a Viper V2 Pro, my mouse had no issue before and now it just randomly turns off and my middle click doesn’t work. Synapse 4 might’ve fixed my random power offs of the mouse but did not fix my middle click, no matter what I did. (Edit: Synapse 4 does not fix the random power offs)

As it is quite clear reading from the above comments, its an software issue.

I tried all of the above suggestions but the problem didn’t go away.
If you have similar issues and other solutions dont work, try this:
To fix the scroll wheel button not working, I made sure I had my profiles saved on my mouse and uninstalled Synapse and just like that the scroll wheel button works again the way it should.

There is 2-step fix (without opening the mouse) for common issues with scroll wheel. Step 2 is the main reason, learned from a reddit comment, linked below. It worked for me, might work for you as well (unless the mouse is very old, filthy, damaged from violent shaking/ smashing). [Step 1] Blow air (with your mouth) through the side gaps of the scroll wheel, but pressurized air would work too. [Step 2] Invert your mouse top down, put the scroll wheel on the mouse pad, drag it forward a few times fast, drag it backward a few times fast. [Done] Now try scrolling in both directions to check for any involuntary reverse direction rotation/ stutter/ rubber banding/ accidental rotation from a slight touch/ sensor getting triggered from mouse movement/ scrolling not working at all.
