Razer Blade 15 2019 Advanced won't charge or run off battery

Hi!

I have a Razer Blade 15 2019 Advanced (RZ09-03018) which recently stopped charging and will not operate from battery.

Symptoms:

  • PSU light is green, but charge light is off
  • Computer will not power on if unplugged (no lights, no fans, no life at all)
  • If plugged in and running, it will shut off immediately if unplugged
  • Windows thinks the battery is at 84% and charging, but that number does not move

I’ve tried the following:

  • Removing and re-seating the battery ribbon cable connector
  • Checking the connector for signs of wear or debris
  • Leaving the computer unplugged for 24 hours
  • Leaving the computer plugged in for 24 hours
  • Hard resetting the computer by holding down the power button

I am running Windows 11 with all latest updates and drivers, and I have the latest BIOS firmware available. I’ve owned it since 2020 and this is the first sign of any problems so far.

From searching around it seems others have been experience the exact same issue with no resolution other than “it fixes itself after a while”, so it sounds more like a power management issue rather than the battery or adapter itself, so I’m hesitant to spend money replacing those until I get more info. I’m also certain that if the PSU is able to run the computer, then it must be in a suitable condition to charge it. It’s not a “smart” adapter like the newer models, just three connections.

It’s also disappointing to read that the newer 2020 and 2021 Blades seem to be suffering the same fate. I use it for development as well as playing games so I was hoping one of the more expensive high-end models would be reliable, but it let me down when I was due to give a demo last week :(

Thanks in advance for any tips, solutions, and thoughts!

I have this exact problem its a Razer 15 mid 2019 base and it will run perfectly well on mains power but the battery will not charge and the machine will not run on battery power.

Disconnecting the mains power results in the machine immediately shutting down.

I have replaced the battery as the original battery was severely bloated but this problem occurs regardless of whether I use the original battery or its replacement.

I have removed the windows battery drivers as suggested in various threads and I have also run the machine off a ubuntu boot disk, both operating systems have the same issue.

additionally the ubuntu battery status is reporting “waiting to charge”

I finally got a free afternoon to take a look at this further, but no result I’m afraid. I stripped the machine down completely and checked all components, cables, and solder joints on the board were free from breaks or burns, but nothing stands out. I can trace voltage from the battery to various places on the board so again it seems like a power management issue to me rather than a problem with the battery itself.

I did try the Windows driver trick listed on other posts but if it’s not charging whilst switched off then I can’t see how it’s a software issue.

Unsure where to go from here. I was expecting a response from Razer by now, which is frustrating. I can’t really use it for work solely off the PSU since I travel, so at the moment this thing is just an expensive paperweight.

Oh I’ve also tried removing the battery, PSU, and CMOS battery to see if it might trip some power management thing to reset (works on MacBooks!) but no change.

Hi,

I just got the same problem with my Razer Blade 2019 advanced.

No charging light on computer but PSU light is green.

Mine shows 0% battery and does not change.

If i unplugg the charger it dies.

left it charged for 72h now and also had it unplugged for 24h

I’ve tried everything you’ve tried.

I’m no closer to finding the solution :(

Same here. Replaced battery. Replaced CMOS battery. Based on Bitwarden not working properly, it looks like CMOS battery is not being charged either or has power issues.

Due to this issue, I opted to just getting a Mac for work. If this wasn’t the case, I would have gotten maxed blade again. Over the years I’ve replaced like 3 batteries (bloat problem, but charging was fine). With hardware issues like this, it’s hard to justify 4-5k+.

Clearly, this is somewhat common issue. It would be nice if Razer would reach out to the affected and debug this. Even if there’s no easy solution, at least they would acknowledge this. Considering this is happening to laptops from different years, I’m not convinced this is fixed in the newer ones, as it seems like it appears only after a while.

Same problem here (Blade 15 Advanced 2020), I guess they just don’t care about older models anymore.

Typing from my Razer, on battery! I bought the cheapest used battery I could find on eBay just as a troubleshooting step, and it’s actually working.

I’ve also found some more info about what might be going wrong, thanks to this repair video:

If I’m correctly interpreting what’s happening in the video, it seems that the battery has requested not to be charged because it’s entered some kind of protection mode. In the video he attaches the battery to another laptop which seems to ‘wake it up’ again, and in my case a new battery is working. Unfortunately the video ends there, presumably removing the board would have been costly for the customer.

What prompted the battery to enter such a state is still a mystery, so I’ve no idea if/when it will happen again, but if it does I’ll message the YouTuber to ask if he ever followed up on this issue. I wonder if it overheated in my bag at one point, since Windows Update loves to wake this thing up and let it cook itself...

Now that mine is working again I’ll probably just sell it and look for another make. I’m still very annoyed that nobody from Razer has chimed in to offer help, I get that my laptop is out of warranty but it’s still a very, very expensive computer and I expected at least some hints or tips to help me diagnose the issue properly before resorting to a £1000+ board replacement. It also appears to be a common fault across several generations of these machines. Never again, Razer :)

Is not a software or battery issue. The problem is PMIC (Power Management IC chip). My Razer had the same symptoms, stuck on charging at 81% and without power it would suddenly shut down. I replaced the battery twice, same symptoms, reset the bios and the same thing. I took it to a repair center and they replaced my IC chip.
