Razer Blade 15 Advanced slow and stuttering after Intel driver update

Razer Blade 15” Advanced (2021) | RZ09-0409x

Windows 11 Home v 22H2

I should have heeded the warning on the Intel Driver & Support Assistant page: “Installing this graphics driver from Intel will remove customizations from your computer manufacturer (OEM)”.

Ever since installing an update, “Intel® Arc™ & Iris® Xe Graphics - Windows*” or “Intel® Graphics Driver 31.0.101.4575 for Intel® Arc™ Graphics, 11th-13th Gen Intel® Core™ processor graphics”, I’ve been running into performance issues at least while my laptop is unplugged. (The update was made, despite the warning, to allow EVE Online to play -- it wouldn’t otherwise.)

I’ve managed to uninstall the Arc bloat, and with some wrangling of the Intel Graphics Command Center utility and NVIDIA Control Panel (mostly to get it to make use of the dedicated GPU), I’ve managed to make the system feel overall less sluggish and with fewer notable stutters.

My settings inside of Intel Graphics Command Center don’t want to load at the moment and I can’t recall them, but inside of the NVIDIA Control Panel, I’ve under ‘Manage Display Mode’ I’ve set the display to only use the NVIDIA GPU. At the time, the usage of the integrated GPU throttled up to 100% repeatedly with each stutter. While this has been improved, issues below remain.

However, the laptop while running unplugged still feels as though it runs hotter, consumes more battery life, and stutters even still but to a lesser degree. I notice the stuttering a great deal more when the laptop comes out of sleep and when applications open. The added second in time to make the window previews appear when I alt + tab adds to the sluggish feeling.

If any have ideas on how to remedy this, please let me know. Instructions maybe on rolling back the driver and restoring any of the original OEM customizations would be appreciated.

Its definitely good to back up your computer on occasion, specifically for reasons like this. At least make sure to back up your drivers before doing any driver updates.

I’ve been seeing the available update through Intel, with the same exact warning, and had been wondering whether or not to go through with it. Looks like I have my answer, for now…

I would back up any important stuff to an external HDD, just to be safe, then check and see if you have a restore point to return to. I believe that most PCs have the C drive protected with restore points by default, and they usually create one every time you update a driver. At least, that’s been my experience so far.
