I have a Razer Blade 15 Advanced 2019 (RZ09-03018). I originally had a cold-boot issue where the laptop would take multiple attempts to boot, and I found that the BIOS date had reset to 1/1/2017, so I replaced the CMOS battery with an ML1220.

After replacing the battery, the laptop booted normally several times and the cold-boot issue seemed fixed. However, after I selected “Update and shutdown” from Windows, I started getting a new problem: the Razer logo appears for a split second and then the internal display immediately goes black.

Initially, Windows would still boot and I could use an HDMI external monitor, but Windows did not detect the internal display at all in Device Manager. The RTX 2080 Max-Q had no errors.

I tried:

  • System Restore to a point before the problem
  • Win + Ctrl + Shift + B
  • Win + P and cycling display modes
  • Removing the CMOS battery and booting without it
  • Reinstalling the ML1220
  • Removing the SSD and trying to boot without it
  • Reinstalling the SSD
  • Reseating both RAM sticks
  • Reseating the internal LCD/eDP cable
  • Trying to boot from a Windows 11 installation USB
  • Trying to enter BIOS with F1
  • Testing HDMI

None of these changed the Razer logo → instant black screen behavior.

The situation has now gotten worse: HDMI no longer displays anything either, although the laptop remains powered on and the Caps Lock key responds. Interestingly, pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete causes the Razer logo to briefly appear on the laptop’s internal screen again, exactly like during normal startup.

The LCD panel doesn’t seem completely dead because it can still clearly display the Razer logo for that split second. I’m trying to figure out whether this is a BIOS/EC/Optimus/GPU initialization issue or a motherboard/display circuitry problem, and what I should try next.

I’m begging anyone please help me with this issue. I really love this laptop. It was supposed to be a simple CMOS battery change, then pressing the Windows Update ruined everything. I don’t even know what it actually updates (the button was at the windows lock screen).
