Razer Core X Chroma with Nvidia 4080 Founders Edition | Razer Insider
Skip to main content

The Nvidia 4080 Founders Edition will physically fit into the Razer Core X Chroma.  However, the power supply (which should be able to supply 700W total and 650W dedicated to the 12V rail), only has two PCIe connectors while the card requires 4 PCIe connections.  Nvidia states that the maximum power consumption of the RTX 4080 is 320W. (https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/news/geforce-rtx-40-series-ultra-efficient-beyond-fast/)

  1. Is it possible to power the RTX 4080 with this power supply?  Can you use Y splitters to do this?
  2. Is there anything wrong with using Y splitters to power all 4 connections?
  3. Will Razer come out with a replacement power supply that provides a native 12VHPWR port to support these larger cards?

I am running Nvidia 4080 Founders Edition as of today 101823 in the Razer Core X Chroma.

I am NOT by all means a tech-head, but I can hold my own.

I was trying to get information on line and very few have mentions of this card USING the Core X Chroma.

All I read was ‘do not use a splitter’; but I noticed some people on the web were building their boxes using splitters or pigtails, with no one really mentioning ‘why not?’ I did find one mention of loss of voltage, not really an issue since I am using an eGPU.  some people that are not electricians mentions melting and blowing up. not good reasons since no one mentions the results how they exploded their devices and what cables they were using. so i am chalking up to these people spreading false information.

I bought the splitter from amazon for 10.99:

my box isn’t smoking or over heating as of yet. it’s been active for 4 hours tested on cyberpunk 2077 although, the updates have been crashing on me, I’ll reinstall later. call of duty mw2 no issues, callisto protocol, immortals of aveum runs good. I set the settings at high for all the games.

I am monitoring the card with GPU-Z - TechPowerUp

I’ll post again IF I do have issues sometime down the road.

101923 reinstalled cyberpunk 2077 settings at ray tracing overdrive. no issues, a couple video skips and a couple quick freezes (less than 1 sec) played almost 2 hours and all good. The power draw was high, but not peak heating and no massive power draw power consumption stayed around 50% TDP on the razer core x chroma nvidia 4080 founders edition.
