This mouse is not new, was bought in 2013. However recenlty it started doing this: tracking mouse movement suddenly completely fail. No response by the cursor. Looking at the underside the IR diode is off (normally a faint red light is visible) the sensor itself may-or-may not function at this point, there's no way for me to tell.

But the mouse itself remains connected and the buttons work fine, I just can't move the cursor. So it seems certain that the cable is alright.



After several minutes, I hear the Windows device disconnect and reconnect sound. Then everything is fine for a while. First it was doing it rarely once in a day or two, the after some weeks multiple times an hour.



What can be the cause? Did some part of the electronics age out? Is it likely to be fixable?

Several years ago (around quarter of its life) the switches were replaced, they were of shoddy quality, since then it has been working fine.
