unable to customize individual keys in chroma studio

i cant select specific keys to give them a different lighting effect. it says to "ctrl left click" to select a specific key or group of keys but it will only give me the full keyboard and apply each effect to the full keyboard. is there a different way to select a specific key to give it its own lighting effect? even with the "on select keys" option selected I am unable to select individual keys. if it helps I've only had this laptop for a few months I believe it is the newest 15in base model.
