Why are you giving out activation codes for outdated app?

Dear Razer Support Team,

When I downloaded the 7.1 Surround Sound app and entered my activation code, I was greeted with a pop-up stating that you’ve upgraded to THX Spatial Sound and recommending I uninstall the 7.1 Surround Sound software.

This leaves me questioning why activation codes are still being issued for outdated software if users are immediately directed to uninstall it in favor of an upgrade. Furthermore, being asked to pay for the THX Spatial Sound app feels unfair, especially when I’ve already invested in Razer hardware under the expectation that your software would provide the advertised functionality. Continuing to distribute codes for something you’re actively phasing out is misleading at best and a bad customer experience at worst. You’re essentially asking me to pay twice: first for the hardware, and then again for an upgrade you’ve implied is necessary, especially since you said I should uninstall the 7.1 Surround Sound app.

As a loyal customer, I believe this situation could be better handled. I am requesting an activation code for THX Spatial Sound to replace the redundant 7.1 Surround Sound activation code I was issued. This would align with the messaging that you’ve moved on to better technology and provide a more satisfying customer experience.

Thank you for addressing this matter, and I look forward to your prompt response.

Right? If they don’t want us to use the old software, and in the same message they’re pushing us to use the new software, why do they give us activation codes for the old software? This is actually called “Bait & Switch”.

The process misleads customers into thinking they are getting a complete and up-to-date product experience, only to push them toward spending more money for an essential upgrade.

THE BAIT -
Razer promotes its headsets with features like 7.1 Surround Sound as part of the package, which implies you’re getting high-quality audio software included with your purchase. They even provide activation codes to unlock this functionality, reinforcing the idea that it’s a fully supported and relevant feature.

THE SWITCH -

Once you download and attempt to use the 7.1 Surround Sound software, a pop-up informs you that it’s outdated and you should uninstall it in favor of THX Spatial Sound, which they frame as the “better” and necessary replacement. However:

  • They do not provide a free upgrade path to THX Spatial Sound.
  • Customers must pay for this "better" version, which feels like an essential part of the product experience they advertised in the first place.

THE PROBLEM -

  • Implied Value: You bought the headset expecting full, modern surround sound capabilities as part of the purchase. If 7.1 is being retired, the expectation is that Razer should provide access to the new software for free or at least offer a discount.
  • Forced Upsell: By declaring the included software obsolete, they’re effectively forcing you to spend more to get the experience you thought you’d already paid for.
  • Customer Misdirection: The promotional materials do not warn customers that 7.1 Surround Sound is outdated or that an additional purchase will be necessary for optimal functionality.

Absolutely! 100% agree with you! What a shame, Razer! Shame on you. If I knew that earlier I would not buy this headphones!!!

I 100% agree!
Why are they even giving us an activation key for something free and outdated in the first place? They should provide the full experience for such overpriced hardwares.

I don't mind paying for THX Spatial Audio. It's just the principle - why not just give the paying customer access to the latest software, instead of giving them old software and telling them not to use it? It was between this Razer headset I bought and the Logitech G432. Now I think I made a mistake and should have got the Logitech G432. No doubt I wouldn’t be dealing with this nonsense. I mean, if they really wanted to sell the THX Spatial Audio, they could include it in the price of the headset at a 50% rate. Dolby Atmos is cheaper than this, so most people would likely choose that anyway if they had a choice between Dolby Atmos and THX Spatial Audio. So, they wouldn’t be losing anything really. It would be an additional sale.

This is just a simple ripoff... The headsets are already overpriced by Razer. If they included the latest version of THX with the device, at least it could be said they were fair with their overpriced headsets. But making you pay for it is simply unethical.
