2020 Razer Blade Advanced Overheating


My laptop has recently started overheating. I’ve followed all the Razer tech articles and made sure everything is up to date. I have even re-installed/reset the machine. Fans etc are all running and clear.

Reading on here some have tried to replace the vapor cooling. Sounds like it could fail. I can’t find any part numbers and it’s almost impossible trying to get hold of Razer.

If anyone can help me get this $3k laptop back up and running I would appreciate it.

Hi there sorry to hear that. Do you mean it’s shutting down because the temperature are too high, that’s the term of overheating. Usually If the cpu or gpu runs hot the cpu or gpu frequency would run lower or known as thermal throttle, in this case considering it’s 2020 model if you’re running games often maybe the thermal compound inside are drying out that made the chips aren’t properly cooled, so maybe it’s worth to repasting it with new thermal compound, for your information, 2018 blade 15 i had twice repasted it, 2021 blade 14 once. Hope that will give a clue to solve your issue.

When under the CPU reaches 100 degrees C and after an hour or so it gets so hot that I cannot touch it anywhere without burning myself.

With turbo boost on on blade thin cassis 100 degrees is not avoidable but the frequency would throttle down to lower the temperature and blade cassis is part of cooling system to dissipate the heat so you need to have high fans rpm, not dusted fans and free bottom lid areas for better intake while gaming in order to keep it less hot. 2018 blade 15 advanced and 2021 blade 14 both hot on upper keyboard areas where the heat being outputted, palm rest areas I’d say warm not hot since I can lay my palms down on those areas while gaming. I use balance mode and higher fans rpm in to keep cpu temperature in 80ish and gpu 70ish areas average. For 2 years old gaming laptop you want to check thermal paste if it’s not dried out as well on blade 15 2018 i had twice changed the thermal paste with yearly fans dusting.
I don't think your issue is overheating. I would look towards a battery/charger issue. Repasting and cleaning should have already resolved that problem.
The temperature of the 2018 Blade 15 Advanced and 2021 Blade 14 gaming laptops can become hot, especially in the upper keyboard areas where the heat is outputted. To keep the temperatures under control, it's recommended to use a balance mode and have high fan RPMs. Dust-free fans and clear bottom lid areas can also improve the intake while gaming. Additionally, it's a good idea to check the thermal paste if it's not dried out and to change it every year along with cleaning the fans.

it will swell the battery. I would do an undervolt can decrease up to 20c without losing much performance if your silicon chip(GPU,CPU) is good for it.

It’ll be nice if undervolting can reduce so much heat, you meant maybe disabling turbo boost? Undervolting won’t decrease the performance mostly adding since it’s reduce temperature for better and stable clock frequency.

you can fine tune your system to better results.

here is an excellent example of fine tuning.
some silicon chips may be cooler than others. so fine tuning is convenient.
Sometimes the simplest solutions are best

Elevate laptop at angle, i.e. small object for rubber back feet to sit on. So it's minimal contact and not touching rest of chassis or blocking fans or vents behind display. i.e. a small box for rubber feet to sit on. If can elevate completely vertically at all 4 corners even better for less chassis heat contact on desk.

Put the fans to max only when deciding to use GPU intensive task. Then manually switch back to auto on Razer Synapse. Fans are cheaper than CPU, let it run max only when you're doing intensive tasks then back to auto.

Strange how Synapse 3 custom mode is missing fan control if you wanted to set CPU and GPU to max. Only in balance mode, but then can't change CPU/GPU setting. So it's one or the other.

You could re-apply thermal paste if confident. Would need below and watch YouTube based on your laptop model.

  • T5 Torx screw driver for chassis. Don't try another object to remove these screws, end up stripping them.
  • Mini screwdriver for inside
  • Isopropyl Alcohol Wipes to clean old paste off
  • New Thermal paste.

If not confident then better to find local laptop repair shop.

  • Research on internet they have good reputation as well. .
  • You buy your own thermal paste to give them as they may not use a good one. i.e. Artic or ask what brand they use and research if suitable.
  • It would take around half hr, so consider that when they quote you. i.e. $50-100. Something like $200 is too high as example.
