Blade 17 - external monitor via USB-C/Thunderbolt 4 not working

Userlevel 1
Just purchased this new Razer Blade 17. Connecting to an external monitor with a USB-C-to-display-port cable, and a straight display port cable. From either of the Thunderbolt 4 (USB-C) ports. No signal detected from monitor. Whenever I plug in a monitor, NVIDIA control panel shows Optimus as the active graphics adapter. And the NVIDIA GPU becomes disabled and I'm unable to select. See screenshot.

I just used the Razer BIOS updater and updated the EC as well.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I am having the same exact problem..please advise

It looks like they dont have a simple solution. They took my conversation offline to handle it with me over email. But that has just ocmplicated things. I've had to supply the same information to them over and over. And they have a new support person working on my case it seems daily.

UPDATE!

[Blade 15 & 17 2022] USB-C Port is unable to connect to external monitor after updating Nvidia Driver.

Issue: After updating to latest Nvidia Driver (later than 512.33), the USB-C Port will not work when connecting to external monitor.

Affected models:

Blade 17 2022 - Both USB-C Ports will not work
Blade 15 2022 - the right USB-C Port will not work. QHD 240Hz
Razer.Speedcr0ss
Update:

We have found that by updating to the latest NVIDIA driver (later than 512.33), the USB-C port will not work when connecting to an external monitor. Please check the following:

• The Blade 17 2022 | RZ09-0423x (both USB-C ports will not work).
• The Blade 15 2022 | RZ09-0421x (the USB-C on the right side will not work).
• For QHD 240Hz SKU, which supports Advance Optimus (the "Manage Display Mode" option in the NVIDIA control panel will not be present).

Razer is aware of this behavior, and the Support Team is tackling this issue and currently communicating with our developers. Our workaround is to perform a display driver rollback to 512.33, the same version in the Windows update. If the rollback button is grey out, uninstall the current driver and perform a Windows update check.

UPDATE!

[Blade 15 & 17 2022] USB-C Port unable to connect to the external monitor after updating Nvidia Driver.

Issue: After updating the latest Nvidia Driver (later than 512.33), the USB-C Port will not work when connecting to an external monitor.

Action: The fix is now available in Nvidia version 517.48 via the GeForce Experience. Please take note that it will not be available through Windows update.

Should you need additional assistance, please send me a ping or submit a case to our Support Team through this link.
I am having this same issue. I have started a support case
I just tried something that worked for me (at least for now). I downgraded my nvidia driver to this: GeForce Game Ready Driver | 512.15 | Windows 10 64-bit, Windows 11 | NVIDIA. It's a few months old. And now the connection seems to be working fine.

Anyone else on here who still has their Blade try this?
**FIXED..!!**
Spoke to the lovely chap at Razer Store in London, and he suggested a BIOS update for my 2021 Blade 17 Pro, and I updated from BIOS version 103 to 106 and it worked..!!
So, I'm running latest Nvidia drivers, latest Thunderbolt 4 drivers, latest Synapse and this BIOS update was the final key to the mystery :))
USB-C Touchscreen now works on Thunderbolt 4 port with a single cable.
Well the thread is marked as FIXED
I don't think the issue is fixed at all

So are you saying it's a Razer update fix required here?
Keen to not fork off onto some weird BIOS branch only to be saddled with a choice to loose the setup (as advertised mind you and therefore grounds for compensation / redress at the expense of the supplier).

This is probably why they're being cagey. Since they have offered a device that can't provide the advertised feature. The Sqeaky wheel gets the oil - amazed how many people are having the same issue and no addressed solution.

The Support email I got doesn't help either.

I can be wrong but from what see here and on the web the issue is for regular 30xx and ti cards. Every brand that shipp device with one of this cards have the same problem. Some brands like write above fix the issue with bios update also here someone write that have bios for he”s device and this fix the issue. Base on everyting we stuck with premium laptop that is very expensive with enginering team from Razer that cant do their job find and fix the problem. MSI fix the same problem with one week we waiting almost two month.

Yeah - feels like they're making it a "you problem" - rather than an issue with their bios. Not great ITAR either since they've largely ignored this thread. Suggest tweeting them might make its way via a different channel to someone who can actually diagnose / triage the problem - or make that happen!

You can find in this thred messages from Razer support employe but he can only adress the issue is prezent and it for the team that will investigate the problem. The Real problem is team that should eliminate the problem lin Max week or two. Lack of knowlage is why there is no fix for this dat.

I own a Razer Blade 17 2022 , NVidia RTX 3070ti

And manage to fix the problem with downgrade Nvidia to 512.95

All good now

This is not a fix but temporary solution or workaround/ Fixed will be when you can update driver to up to date driver and everything will be working as should be. For now this is not possible.

NVIDIA Game Ready Driver 517.48 apparently has fixed the issue. Probably might want to try it.

I can confirm! I updated to the latest driver just now on my Blade 2022 and it solved the problem for me
Have Razer Blade 17 2022.
Also wanted to confirm. Downloaded Game Ready Drivers 517.48 (9/27/2022 release) and the Window 11 update 22H2 (9/27/2022 release) and Thunderbolt to Display Port 1.4 is working. (Finally!)
Wanted to add that sometimes Display Ports can act "funny" and require a computer reset before the work.

Best of luck to all you Razer Blade users FINALLY using Display Port again!
Still not working for me. Razer Blade 17 (Mid 21, RZ09-0406). Bios Version 1.04 NVidia Drivers 517.48 and 522.25, one monitor. I have tried every possible combination what to plug in where. Nothing works.
Rollback to super old drivers works so it's not an hardware issue.
Got the new Razer Blade 17 2022 (12800H, RTX 3080 Ti, QHD 240 Hz).
Current BIOS version 1.07 (but how if latest on Razer downloads is 1.06?), EC FW Version 1.02. Win 11 with latest updates.

Connecting external portable monitor - from either of the Thunderbolt 4 ports there is no signal detected, but monitor swithces on (using Razer Thunderbolt 4 Cable, connecting directly to the ports).
HDMI to type C - same thing.

Tried these combinations with Lenovo and Apple laptops - all working fine.

Rollback/Updating/Studio or Game Ready drivers/Optimus or Discrete GPU - still nothing.
Tried BIOS and EC Updater - have "This firmware tool is for use only with Blade and compatible systems. This application will now close." message - checked BIOS and surprisingly System Serial Number and System SKU are N/A - what is going on? And how to fix all of this?

I'm working on this machine and Revert to Defaults is not an option.
Waiting for Razer comments. Thanks.

Just up my previous message:

1. How can I make my external monitor work with Blade 17?
"[SUPPORT VIDEO] How to Troubleshoot External Monitor Connection Issues for Razer Blade" - not helps.

2. Why there is no serial number in BIOS, and how to fix it? - I can't get any updates because of this thing.
This is not resolved. I am able to confirm that this is not a Razer Dock issue - when I attach my Dell XPS 13 2-in-1 9310 to the dock the monitors work just fine.
However when I use my Razer Blade 15 (2022) with a RTX 3080 TI, it refuses to recognize more than one external display. When I attach the 2nd monitor via the other Thunderbolt slot, the monitor works fine.
The displays are both Dell U2515H with 2560x1440 @ 60Hz. So bandwidth should not be a problem.

I have multiple co-workers experiencing the exact same problem on all mentioned driver versions. This makes using the Razer Blade 15 2022 unfit as a proper workstation laptop.

@Razer.Speedcr0ss good morning!

We still have issues with external displays, and workarounds no longer work 😕
Any ideas? Are you able to escalate this, so it gets prioritized?

Thanks

Yeah it is either some driver issue, BIOS issue, or us few have defective units

I think it’s a combination of things.
At work my razer blade 17 mid 2021 with RTX 3070 works when connected to a docking station 65W, it charges and it displays suff on 2 external monitors connected to the docking station.

At home if I connect my laptop to my LG screen 5K2K which delivers 96 watts, it does not work, no image no charging - well sometimes it works like 30 seconds until some BS gets loaded (file, driver, setting, god knows) and then nothing. If I plug the power cable, everything works fine.

So thunderbolt cable from laptop to monitor PLUS power cable WORKS WELL.

BUT With the last version of the nvidia drivers it doesn’t display anything.

I believe it’s a combination of driver issues maybe with power management or thunderbolt 4 as well.
And maybe windows messing this up.

I’m on windows 11 and I made a bios update for the GPU thing.

I’m supposed to work on this machine, I can’t spend my time trying to fix things.

Allow me to start an investigation for your laptop's concern by sending me a photo of your unit's BIOS main tab so I can check its firmware version and other info via PM. You can save the via any online drive, then pasting it in your message. Let's continue our conversation there.

*Moved to systems board.

Yeah from what I hear their support is pretty bad. I am looking for something else now.
May go with Asus Strix Scar or MSI Raider
I have created a support ticket for this ( *Omitted). I was not helped either and was redirected to another team that will eventually get back to me. I will probably return my Razer if a solution is not found here immediately.
the ticket was created today.
I've got the same problem. Even with the Razer dock it doesn't want to work. every other PC or laptop will display an output.

Got the Razer Blade 17 (2022) 3070 Ti, 12800H
