Razer Book 13 SSD upgrade | Razer Insider
Skip to main content
Hey there,

I recently purchased the new Book 13 FHD i7 and have been wanting to replace the default 256GB SSD with the Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus 4TB.

Does anyone have experience with this drive for the Book 13 or any other Blade? I’ve read around that people need to make some modifications in order to fit the drive in as it’s double sided.

I’ve also read that it runs hot. Not sure if it’s worth mentioning but I bought my Book 13 with the Gelid GC Extreme paste for the CPU+GPU.

Would appreciate guidance on this as I’m very close to pulling the trigger on this new Sabrent 4TB drive.

Thanks in advance.
I think it should fit, because there is small gap on the bottom of the NVMe SSD, when you'll put it in the socket.

I'd go with something different for eg. WD_Black SN750. I have a very good experience with Crucial and Samsung NVMe drives - but they don't have 4TB option (for now).

Appreciate your reply. Just wondering why would you go for something different? Is it due to performance, reliability, heat (genuinely curious)? If Samsung had an 4TB NVME I would definitely go with them but I need the extra space and external storage isn't my thing.

My second pick would actually end up being the Rocket Q 8TB.

If you’re okay with not full speed PCIe4 it’s fine going with sabrent 4 plus, maybe you’ll get a bit faster than fastest PCIe3. As for rocket Q 8TB, I think no one tested it yet since nvme alone cost more than your book 13 and most current gaming laptops. For 4tb sabrent I saw users using it on stealth and blade 15 without problems. I use hot Samsung Evo 970 1Tb on book 13, it has cooling pad that dissipate heat to the cassis so you don’t have to worry about ssd thermal, and btw it’s less related with CPU thermal since it’s separate cooling, the cpu is cooled by vapor chamber. I don’t open the heatsink yet but shouldn’t it only cpu inside since intel xe is igpu, and I think it’s not intel Xe max where gpu die separated, correct me if I’m wrong.

If I recall 11th Gen Intel processors support Pcie 4 so my Book 13 would support Gen4 speeds for the Rocket 4 Plus. Yeah the 8TB is really expensive indeed which was why I was looking at the Rocket 4 plus first. I should mention I bought my Book for non gaming uses, my Blade 15 mercury however is for gaming. :)

Also where can I go about getting a cooling pad? The Sabrent drive is known for getting toasty and I would definitely appreciate the extra cooling from a pad.

Yes theoretically, but it isn’t i think on similar CPU 1165 on XPS13 it couldn’t get max speed only stucked on highest PCIe3 speed barely 5000mbs read instead 7000mbs PCIe4, my Evo is already 3000mbs plus which’s to me already fast. Difference between 2000mbs and 3000mbs on windows or gaming boot isn’t huge I think only seconds matter unless you’re daily transferring GB files maybe higher speed is important. However you can always try it if it can hit over 5000mbs.

Yes if you’ve blade 15 it gives way better gaming experience, but since mine is 2018 advanced with only 1070maxq, and book 13 pairing with Razer Core housing bad boy rtx3070 OC, now blade 15 I use mostly for working and media consumption and book 13 for gaming:big_grin_:.

Yeah I wonder why the XPS can’t reach max speeds but still 5000mbs is insanely fast.

In terms of data transfer I won’t be doing a massive amount and I’d say if it can reach 5000, I won’t really complain.

My Blade is the 2019 with the 2070 MQ and I found it excellent for gaming at 1080p (my taste in games also isn't the latest AAA). I am however surprised you use your Book 13 for gaming with the external GPU since it’s capped at 60hz and has a 16:10 ratio. How do you find it? Did you consider the Stealth before opting for the Book?

I love how the Book now matches my mercury 15 and having the touchscreen has proven to be awesome.

On Egpu setting if you use internal screen it’ll hit performance a lot due data looping to internal from gpu on egpu enclosure, so I use higher refresh rate 1440p or for better quality 4K monitor 60Hz, you’ll get better gaming experience on those monitors. Beside at home I’m curious if there’s still Poeple play game on laptops internal screen especially small 13, if there’s maybe only me playing on book 13 16:10 ratio without Egpu, only intel Xe, as I mentioned it’s not bad at all GTAV normal setting 1200p can sometimes hitting 100fps, yes it’s useless more than 60fps and resulting sometimes screen tearing, but I’m a nerd who like pushing my hardware:big_grin_:

Oh yes I’ve blade stealth as well and book 13 kind upgrade for Core v2 setting since it has better cpu for it and I’m quite bored with black laptops in past over half decades and since it’s hard to get mercury blade 15 in EU and always want mercury Razer setting so I went with book 13. I got also mercury viper, huntsman mini and stand for matching the setting. Yes touchscreen is awesome on the go or worksheet when I’m too lazy pulling out the mouse or when consuming media when cooking or eating since screen is easier to clean than trackpad or keyboard.
