RX2070 verse RX2080 | Razer Insider

Hey Guys,

Getting ready to order a Blade 15, and the final question comes down to GPU and going 2070 verse 2080? At the end of the day all things equal is the 2080 worth an extra $400 to the cost of the Blade 15?

Thoughts?
I would rock with a 2070. 2080 is a MAXQ which will have similar performance to 2070 (Yes better but not by a huge amount). Not worth the extra heat, drop in battery life, and extra cost IMO. Besides, it is only a 1080P screen which the 2070 will chew through.
There’s no direct comparison yet but you can compare mobiletech Blade 2080 and notebookcheck Blade 2070 reviews. On notebookcheck there’s chart comparison Blade 2070maxq and other brands 2080maxq with similar cpu, it may be a slightly different with Blade 2080 model due oem gpu setting (gpu tdp, bios/ec setting) but it’s not huge.

I was in the same situation two weeks ago. I researched a lot on the difference between the two GPUs. I finally came to the same conclusion that @ChiefNieth has written in his comment. We always like to go for the more powerful GPU when we are gonna spend so much money anyways. But it's really important to make a smart choice here. On a 1080p display, a 2070 MQ GPU will perform fine at the highest settings. A 2080 MQ might increase the frames a bit (or might even not due to CPU bottleneck and thermal throttling) but that increase is really not worth that kind of money. It will be barely noticeable. If we were talking about higher resolution panels or connecting to a monitor, then 2080 MQ might make sense. When gaming only on the laptop, make the smart choice and get the 2070 MQ while saving those $400.

Something else I came across during my research is that packing a 2080 inside a laptop this thin and small (even though its the MQ version) might not have been the best idea. Razer did pack it in somehow and the laptop might have passed all tests but what about the long term deterioration of the internal components when continuously working in the heat generated by that extremely powerful GPU. Also, even though the fans might manage to somehow keep the internals cool, that CPU will most certainly be a bottleneck for the GPU to reach its full potential. Keep in mind that the GPUs in the 2019 RBs have been upgraded to the next gen ones but the CPU is still the same.

So the bottom line is that the 2070 MQ can achieve whatever is possible on a 1080p panel and the 8750 CPU to your complete satisfaction. When I say the 2080 MQ is extremely powerful GPU, I don't suggest that the 2070 MQ is a pushover. It itself is quite a high end MQ GPU more powerful than anything other than the 2080 MQ and you wont see any noticeable difference from the 2080 MQ while gaming on the RB 2019 configuration.

I went ahead and purchased the RB with 2070 MQ and am yet to find anything that might make me regret my decision. Iv'e been playing GTA 5 and it runs perfectly. I haven't checked the exact FPS yet but I can feel and say for sure as a long time gamer that its running very very smoothly. Neither is the laptop heating up much nor do the fans run too loud.

PS: Now I'll use those $400 I saved to go on my next vacation.

Thanks for the thoughts on the 2070 vs 2080 and I am feeling the same as you are describing, now the only difference for me is that later this year when the new Raptor 27" monitors ship I am either going to go with 2 or possibly three of them. Given that understanding would this change your perspective?
I would think that if you're running two or three monitors you're better off going with the 2060 dGPU to save money and heat and buy an eGPU with all the power you want...kinda like I did...with the understanding that TB3 might be a bottleneck.

Depends on how much mobile gaming you actually do, but considering battery life and heat and how much I'm actually gaming on the go, in hindsight I should have gone 1060 instead of 1070 Max-Q personally.

Sure, my reply was purely based on assuming that you will be only gaming on the laptop. If you plan to go for higher resolution monitors then a 2080 MQ will definitely perform noticeably better than 2070 MQ on higher resolutions. But the heat and CPU issues will still remain and the 2080 MQ might still not reach its full potential because of them. But since playing on monitors is important for you, you will have to trust that Razer has built the internals good enough to avoid deterioration due to heat generated and the CPU bottleneck might not be that limiting. I was just not willing to take that risk of trusting them with that for gaming just on the laptop. For you it makes sense and I would have gone for the 2080 MQ too.

Someone mentioned buying a 2060 RB and getting a powerful eGPU. That doesn't seem like a bad option as well as long as you are willing to make space for an eGPU on your desk. Sorry for confusing you more lol. I would have preferred to keep just a powerful laptop and connect the monitors to it for gaming rather than an additional ePGU to clutter my desk. But it depends on you.
I have always been big on QUALITY over FPS. I am happy with 60hz...although I do see a huge difference jumping to 144hz. However, with the potential release of an OLED panel... I think a 4k OLED with a 2080MQ is the perfect combo 😛
Alright tomorrow is order day for me! 2070 or 2080 and do I buy it on Razor or get it on Amazon? Thoughts

2080 for sure and the rest is up to you 😛

So I pulled the trigger on the 2080 from Amazon Wednesday late PM and it is now scheduled for delivery tomorrow! So excited I can't wait for it to show up.
I got the 2070 version and my buddy got the MSI Stealth with the 2080. All we play is rust and with identical settings fps between the two is less that 5%. My 2070 stays 10c cooler than his. We both get frame rate dips into the 40s but it's very rare. Both max around 110 fps and average in the 80s.

Good to know and thanks for sharing he experience. I was really torn between getting the MSI GS75 with the 2080 verse the Blade. But given the your Blade and Razers tech is known for awesome tech on cooling I am not too surprised and the frame rate differences do make sense.

For me - I am actively pacing back and forth in front of the front door as UPS/Amazon are about to deliver my Blade RTX2080 model. 🙂

Gs laptops is built for poor poeple I remember Linus mentioned that 2 or 3 years ago he called the poorBlade when I’m not wrong, the cassis is flex all over the surface (I heard rtx model is better though) when I tried 2018 gs65, that main performance downgrade is also because of the cheaper gpu, it’s 80 watt tdp gpu vs Blade which use always maxed 90 watt. It’s only from hardware wise not manufacturer bios limitation for better thermal (since it’s maxq thin light categories).

That is wise decision, I’m not Linus Fans but he mentioned also cassis gs75 isn’t worth the price for 2080 model in one of his video (apparently bends easily), maybe if 2060 around 2K or less it is fine imo.

You are correct about much of what you said but the 2019 MSI's definitely improved their game and while they still flex they were not too bad. Bottom line is I am typing this response on the Huntsman Elite keyboard, using the Mamba Hyperflux Mouse, and processing this on my Blade RTX2080 laptop! Oh and doing flips with excitement of how great this new laptop is!

I really, really would like to get in touch with you to run some benchmarks and get some data. That is if you have some free time drop me a PM! Cheers!
So here is my set up

Rust isn't the best game to compared the difference between GPUs since it CPU bound. Both system have the same CPUs so the performance is gonna be same even if you have a better GPUs. You quickly realize the performance gaps between two if you was playing something more GPU bound.

I don't play the game but saw some game play video with OSD on different gpu and definitely the GPU play a big role. MSI GS (stealth) using lower 2080maxq tdp 80 watt Watt and blade laptops usually with highest tdp on it's class, probably 2070maxq blade use 90 Watt or maybe because some MSI laptops using single channel ram (all blade comes with dual channel), this game eat ram a lot from OSD value I saw, blade with 2070mq performs similar with 2080mq on MSI stealth. I remember my 1070mq performs similar with zephyrus with full 1070 since it's 90 Watt and the frequency boost to zephyrus full 1070 frequency areas. Both on game and synthetic benchmark was similar I even noticed on some titles are better.
