Hi All,
First time Razer owner here, just bought the new Razer Blade Stealth 2019 4K model. Like the laptop quite a bit, however, I have a bit of a dilemma. I am trying to find a dock that is Thunderbolt 3 compatible which (preferably) HDMI out, some USB 3.0 or 3.1 Type A ports, and ideally the ability to charge the laptop. I tried a Dell D6000, but it wouldn't charge the laptop, and the display switching was atrocious (huge lag of up to 15 seconds when I would close the lid to limit graphics to just the external monitor). Yes, I had the most recent updates from DisplayLink and the Firmware on the device was up to date. I am sending that back.
So I am here to find alternatives. I do not consider myself much of a gamer (at least not at the moment, Flight Sim X and some Golf are about my speed) and so I am not convinced I need or want the Core V2 (especially at an additional cost of another about 1000.00 and the space required). If that is truly the only viable option, it's on the table, but wanted to see what else folks had in mind.
In the interim, how about a USB-C or Thunderbolt 3 dongle with a few USB 3 ports and an HDMI out so I more easily access USB space?
While I am new to the forum, I did take the time to review other threads using the search, but they appear somewhat segmented and outdated, hence this new thread.
Cheers,
Jeff

Maybe this one?

This one might be better - it has more usb 3.0 and it has ethernet

Thanks for your suggestions. However, the first one you mentioned has the same 60W power output to host as the Dell did, which did not work (I don't know if it wasn't being detected as a charger or if the input was considered insufficient for it to register as a charger, no clue). Without being too-closed minded, I suspect it won't work.
As for the other, further down on the page for the Plugable, it specifically states that it will not charge the Razer Blade Stealth (albeit an older model). Other systems listed in that chart do support it, but not the RBS.
I'm wondering if Razer did this by design to force you into using the Core V2. It would be nice to see them develop a TB3 dock that would support all of the features without the need for a larger external case and a separate video card.
Any other ideas?

Hi there, tried Lenovo Thunderbolt Dock? I think it delivers 65 watt which is similar with stealth 2017~ power adapter, you may want to try it. I can’t guarantee it to work though since my stealth 2016 comes with lower 45Watt ac adapter and use this €140 old usb c dock that finely charges it from the wall, now I use mostly one cable solution Core v2 since I need sometimes gpu power for it.
So if I were to shift this thread slightly, and assume I went with the Core V2, then I have to add a GPU. What's a decent GPU on the market now that isn't going to break the bank, but would make getting the Core V2 worth it? Let's say a card budget of 300 US give or take.
Amd cards has great performance for price on that price range, like rx580 that under €200 now and still get performance advantage over your MX150. And I think it still comes with 2 triple A games if you buy from specific sellers.
Before I spend the additional money, is there any chance Razer releases a Core V3 or Core X2 (with USB ports on it) sometime this year? Has there been any discussion of such a thing happening. The laptop is as cutting edge as the Blade Stealth gets right now. No reason to not pair it with the newest Core system if that's coming down the pike shortly.

Honestly I would just recommend the Core V2 and GTX1050 ti or something.
I believe Razer mentioned that the Core X was replacing the Core V2 permanently, highly doubt you will get a V3 anytime this year.

Sorry those earlier ones weren't any good. As for the GPU, when I built my PC, I just wend on to Gumtree (or for you the US equivalent) and got a GTX 960 Strix for AU$100, so about $70 US. As GPUs are difficult to kill/damage, if you're looking so save some money, I highly recommend doing that. Even if you want a more powerful one, they are still much cheaper and in great condition. Just make sure you find one that says that it hasn't been used overclocked.
Hope this helps!

The Core X was released May 2018 I believe. And they didn't announce any new version or prototype at CES this year, just the Tomahawk case variants. I don't think anything is coming "soon" for their eGPUs. After all, the Core X has plenty of room inside and the PSU is expandable/upgradable if you want.
I'm happy with my Core X purchase overall and would recommend. :cool_:

I'm glad you like the Core X. My only issue is with only 2x USB 3.0 A ports on the Stealth, I'm a little short on space.
NOW...assuming that the Core X is able to successfully charge the laptop AND provide all the video transmission necessary, then that frees up the USB-C cable on the left side of the laptop to which I could connect a USB hub if I need additional ports (right now I have the charger on left and my external monitor on right via USB-C to HDMI). But really, IMHO, the whole point of adding a tower to an otherwise compact set-up would be to provide additional graphics power AND peripheral space right? Or am I missing something here?

Elgato also recently (?) released the Thunderbolt 3 Pro Dock. It provides "up to 85w" of power. Don't know if you saw that one or if it meets your needs instead of going the eGPU route then adding ports with something else.
I have the Stealth 13 2017 edition. It has the 45W power adapter. This particular model has only one Thunderbolt port, which is what is used to charge the laptop. This seriously restricts the ability of using TB 3 devices, since most won't provide more than 10W of power. I tried to use the Cable Matters Aluminum Thunderbolt 3 docking station. It supplies 60 W of power to a Thunderbolt device. The laptop and the docking station would connect and then disconnect. It stays connected for about 5 seconds then disconnects.
Has anyone gotten the docking stations to work over Thunderbolt?
Cheers

Hmm interesting to know, is that 13.3 inch one? I’ve 12,5 late 2016 with same ac adapter and used this usb c docking station before got Razer Core, was working fine. That dock had similar issue like yours when I connected to Blade 14 TB3, but not on Stealth. Did you plug in a lot pheriperals on it? Maybe over bandwidth, too many things plugged?
The USB adapter isn't want I am concerned about, I have other USB adapters that work fine. I need to have Thunderbolt 3 to work. I have the Aorus eGPU attached to the Thunderbolt 3 port now, but is only works when the Stealth is above 95% batter, otherwise It can't supply enough power for the laptop to charge and use at the same time. It's a real pain.
What I ended up doing is buying the Razer Chroma Stand. It takes one USB 3.0 and provides 3, so I have a total of 4 USB 3.0 Type A now. That seems sufficient for me since a lot of my stuff is wireless (although as an aside I have two different logitech receivers because they weren't smart enough to make the gamepad use the Unifying Receiver).
Now I just need to stash away funds for a Core X. Not to hijack my own thread here but what's the best video card I could put into a Core X to future proof without running to processor or memory bottlenecking issues. My guess is I could go as high as the 2080 which is basically the newest card but probably won't be able to go beyond that in the future with the Stealth as the memory and processor are fixed.

I am back to my original issue, which I haven't seen answered by Razer support. Have others seen the issue where Thunderbolt 3 devices don't work when the powers on the Razer laptop goes below 95%? I believe there is a firmware issue, where the laptop isn't communicating properly with the other Thunderbolt devices and does a reset. I have seen this happen with two separate Thunderbolt 3 client devices. How do I open a problem ticket with Razer on this issue?

I wouldn't get a 20-series card, I would get a 1080 or TI as the 20 series is 1) hella expensive and 2) not much better unless you're going to be running the latest most demanding games.
But it's your choice!
I'm not an expert in bottlenecks etc, but you should be fine with up to 1080TI and probably up to 2080
Hope this helps!

Thanks, it's put off for a bit, but would like to consider making the leap within a few months. This Chroma stand has helped the Stealth cool more effectively for the not so intense games I play on it now.

Fab! That's something I would buy... If I had enough cash for a Razer Laptop

You can use it with other laptops, I think they say up to 15 inches, and it has a USB 3.0 hub built in (uses one and gives 3). Get one refurbed on Amazon for like 75 bucks. The Chroma feature is cool too, although I keep it turned way down since it is forward facing. It's really quite nice. I did want the Core V2 for the USB hub (trading messages with someone else about that) but didn't get it because I thought it couldn't handle the current cards.

Yeah i know, it's just that I wouldn't use it because I have a desktop and an ultra book that I don't use for strenuous work.
It would look super cool with a Blade though
