robin787Hi Robin, congrats on your new Razer Blade 15. I also recently bought the same model as you and had the same experience as you did in terms of thermals. After some research, it is as Joikansai recommended, under-bolting really helps a lot as I managed to bring the 8750H temps from max 107c down to max 91c when playing CPU intensive titles like AC origins, Forza Horizon.
Hi guys, I need some help and advise here. I have recently purchased a Razer Blade 15 RTX2070 model, which is my very first gaming laptop and my first PC after so many years. I have read through this thread and watched all the youtube videos and reviews, etc. I am really happy and excited about my new toy, however I am a bit confused when it comes to gaming. I saw a lot of people commenting on how cool the temperatures are compared to previous models but I have nothing to compare it with. I have only tried playing Far Cry 5 so far and on 'Ultra' settings I had an average of 78 fps when I ran the in-game benchmark, which is great I think. However, I noticed that the area above the keyboard gets extremely hot (in my opinion) that it almost hurts to touch it. I was curious about the actual temperatures, so I downloaded and installed the HWiNFO64 program to monitor it. I was shocked to see temps approaching 100 degrees, I do not think that is normal. I have Razer Central / Cortex / Synapse installed with performance mode set to Balanced and screen refresh rate at 144 Hz. Whenever Razer Cortex is not running, I have the ability to select a power mode when clicking on the battery icon on Windows taskbar. That one is set it Best Battery life, but I don not see this option after when Razer Cortex is running. Which one do you recommend to use? I have also installed and tried Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility software and ran the benchmark in it (without modifying any parameters of course). I got really disappointing temperatures here as well. Is there something wrong with my config, should I send it back to Razer or am I missing something here? I would appreciate your inputs. (Sorry for my English btw..) Regards, Robin

InsoMiaThat's great! Which software and how much undervolting did you use? Congrats on your Blade, too!

I've got 2070 model today and feels pretty rad. My CPU temps were around 80-90 with Division 2 and slightly above 80 with lighter games. After -0.050 undervolting my CPU never got over 85 but I think that I can drop those little more.
I tried about a 10 different titles and everything ran as expected. However Sekiro Shadows Die Twice did not run over 20 FPS at any resolution. CPU and GPU were on their 60's but the game ran like dogshit! This was strange but I think it is too hard for me anyway.

AntsaK2That’s great one, 8750H is stable at -0.120.

AntsaK2Some steam games sometimes take iGPU (uhd630) instead nvidia gpu, you should change it manually from balance (automatically choose gpu) to max performance (nvidia gpu) on 3D setting specific apps on nvidia control panel. Of course you can’t go further by playing that on 20fps, even on 60fps @1440p I died not twice, but thousands:smile_: It’s wrong title:wink_:

Other strange thing is that Intel XTU shows very often that my system is Power Limit Throttling and Thermal Throttling when I am just using web browser or doing some light task. This happens with or without undervolting and lasts just a second. My temps are at around 40C and there are no spikes on XTU's temperature graph.
Could anyone test this? I best notice this when I run XTU and any other program side by side and start switching apps etc.

AntsaK2Power limit throttling is manufacturer answer toward this 6 core 8750H, it’s to limit cpu tdp not to thermal throttle on gaming. Alienware, MSI, and some manufactures are doing this as well especially on thin light categories, it’s set on ec firmware I think. That’s also why there’re creator (maximizing cpu), gaming (max cpu gpu), and balanced (limit cpu tdp and default gpu). On gaming mode even power limit throttle still there, it’s less than balanced mode (idk quite sure about creator since mine is 2018, only balanced and gaming) and core clock hits most often 3,9 GHz.

So this is normal for Razer laptops and I can just ignore it?

AntsaK2Yes ignore it. You can kill that power limit throttling by tweaking bios but it’s not worth to try, tried that but overall thermal and performance still great on Razer default bios. Other manufacturer has user friendly bios option to change it, but their performance are mostly under Blade due using weird hardware setting (low tdp gpu, single Chanel ram, or bad heat sink) that made them tweak their machine a lot. I’m talking about thin light gaming laptops category btw.

JoikansaiOk Thanks! My next issue is that my 1070 which is connected via Mantiz Venus eGPU won't work. Device manager sees it as a Microsoft Display adapter. When I delete those drivers Windows will recognize that it is GTX 1070 but can not automatically install drivers. If I download those drivers manually from Nvidia I get message that those drivers are already installed. I am out of ideas.

AntsaK2Why do you want to connect 1070 egpu, your 2070maxq performs better than 1070 TB3 egpu setting, it’s bottlenecked by TB3 bandwidth and cpu. Probably you’ll get some advantage with egpu setting if using 2080ti. Anyway first connection may take a bit time until system recognize it well, plug it and wait a moment maybe up to 5 minutes. Idk if it’s compatibility issue with mantiz but on Razer Core first time usually take longer than after recognizing, you don’t have to download new driver if your laptop use newest one already, I think 1070 latest driver is same with 2070maxq one.

JoikansaiWell I'm currently using Mantiz as a glorified USB Thunderbolt hub but I had to test that GPU in there works with Balde. The problem was solved by disabling 2070 from device manager and after rebooting Windows recognized 1070 automatically.

AntsaK2Yes it should come at first. Try Razer gpu switcher, maybe it compatible with Mantiz, a lot easier switching the gpu.

Can someone test Windows Hello in the dark? As in, completely dark room and a dark wallpaper in your lock screen? With my Surface Book 2 it will detect your face no problem thanks to the the IR blaster, but with my RB15 there has to be at least some light for the camera to see you. I wanna know if there is something wrong with my laptop or if its a limitation of this Windows Hello implementation.

crypticcInteresting that the new EC firmware apparently addresses "audible motherboard noise" Anyone tried it yet can comment on the noise? C
Is your Razer whispering to you? Not literally of course and not even like Neo is able to see things in the Matrix - I mean when opening / closing programs do you hear a minute and almost inadible background sound not too dissimilar to a ZX spectrum loading? Or maybe a miniature harddrive. Seems to be coming from somewhere around the S and D keys and only only audible when the machine is fresh and cold so the fan isn't running and ear quite close to the keyboard (although in a silent room it's possible to hear from normal typing distance) I've turned off the screen chroma keyboard so ruled that out. It's not the fan I think as say when the app is opened and the CPU load increases the fan then ramps up and it's a different sound.

Same problem with BIOS update.
After first attemped i've unarchived *.exe to get error log from flasher.
Got this:
Error 423: The host CPU does not have write access to the target flash area. To enable write access for this operation you must modify the descriptor settings to give host access to this region. FPT Operation Failed. So it's definitely EC problem. Hope Razer will fix this soon, whanna try new bios =)
