Kraken original, having horrendous sidetone delay

I bought one of the original Kraken headsets from a local store and plugged it into my PC's front ports (split mic and audio). I went into the Mic settings to enable "listen to this device" so I could have sidetone. Unfortunately there's awful delay on the audio feedback that it sounds like an echo of my voice interrupting everything I try to say. Is there anything I can troubleshoot or use to eliminate this or should I be looking for a different product? BTW: I'm not much of an audiophile, but I am used to using David-Clark headsets in RL cockpits with no trouble. The sidetone circuit in every airplane works the way it ought to and I'm concerned the delay here is due to where the audio processing is happening.
