[TotW] Summer Game Fest 2020 | Razer Insider
Skip to main content

The safer at home procedures put in place for many of us during this pandemic have undoubtedly changed the way a lot of businesses engage their customers. For some industries it's a natural progression, for others it presents much steeper challenges.

The Summer Game Fest is among us, brought to us by Jeff Keighley who brings us the annual Game Awards. With E3 and Gamescom being canceled and big developers and publishers pulling out of future events due to the uncertainty of our current state of affairs this is a great opportunity for companies to take advantage of the internet space. Blizzard does a great job of delivering an electronic experience for those that can't go to Blizzcon. Nintendo started their Nintendo Directs in lieu of an E3 presence years ago and has now become a fan favorite and a reason for fans to lose their shit.

My hope is that a lot of what was supposed to be revealed at E3 and other shows this year come to fruition during the Summer Game Fest. What about you? What do you think? Are in-person shows a thing of the past or is an online event the way things should be done so everyone can enjoy it? Let me know your thoughts, this is the Thread of the Week.
While the in-person E3/PAX/CES experience is unique and special, I think those days are coming to an end. The world just doesn’t work that way anymore, coronavirus aside. The big companies do a great job with virtual shows, as Dekades mentioned. In-person shows are very expensive logistical nightmares for developers and publishers. But, the indie devs are definitely going to feel the change. These little studios don’t have nearly the footprint of a large company and might find it hard to offer a virtual experience on par with their large-AAA producing counterparts. It’ll be interesting to see the direction that the industry moves in after the pandemic is over.
As long as there are nice limited edition goodies for attendees, in-person events won't die.
I do not think that online events can fully replace an in-person event. For me it is hard to imagine that there won't be any offline events for gaming in the future. There are people who like to go there because of the athmosphere and the show or maybe they just want to see the game developers in person because they are their idols. It is not only because the new announcements or teaser trailers and so on.
Watching those events online will never have the same feeling or impact as being there in the crowd. It may be more comfortable to do so but the atmosphere is not to be compared. Other than that, the financial balance will be affected as well, people not being able to browse and buy stuff at that time will impact the profit or whatever other costs are needed. I'd actually prefer to go there and take place to all gaming events, watching them online is not bad either just dont make me pay for it.

PS: Other Totw's haven't beed considered so far. sadface
In-person events won't die but it's nice when everyone can participate from home too 🙂
They should have a live stream version of E3 anyways, most people just watch the trailers and game reveals online so it wouldnt hurt to have it as a giant live stream with dev/ dev teams in their homes/ offices.
Covid19 will change the landscape of many industries. The game industry wouldn't be any different, and since game reveals can come out on the developer teams schedule now it makes more sense for them to not hold an actual E3 this year.

if we can only have online events that would massively gain audience from around the world

Surely there will be a sad feeling watching any event being streamed without crowd but on the other hand companies like bethesda,EA wont be able to lie by hyping the crowd this time around.

I dont remember the event recently were they used a fake audience, that was soooo wrong.I hope they come up with a better plan.

Of course its a unique experience for a consumer to take place in those events and browse and buy stuff but the cost for a company to take place in such an event is even greater that all those that they sell or give in expos.they count on advertising and publicity to cover the expo cost.Comparing an expo with a stage for a streaming now...The cost clearly is way lower with the same publicity and advertisement. Is it the same thought? This is meant to be seen yet.
While there being more online and distant events and things, and those work great for a lot, conventions and gatherings will still make a come back.
I am only looking at Cyber Punk and the Last of Us Part 2. Whoop whoop!
I personally do not see this pandemic stopping in person events as a whole, however I could easily see some in person events stop and change to virtual. I think the most likely things to go fully virtual are new device launches, like Apple's yearly IPhone launch and Google's yearly IO.
Expectations from the Summer 2020 Game Fest.

Just give us Halo Infinite gameplay and start the flighting 343!

End the drought!

In-person shows should never end of course. Nothing beats the atmosphere there.

Seeing fellow gamers and perhaps meeting a Vanguard or Dekades himself. Even the boss Min-Liang Tan.
I wish i will be there to see the Cyberpunk official launch, but i'm glad that everything is being made in the online environment and that everyone can have access to it.
I think in person must never die out

Can you guys imagine if comic con went away?

IMO, everyone should do it like blizzard con and allow a "virtual pass" so those who cant physically be there can watch online .... alongside those who are actually there
Hello friends,

I think the two events are complementary.

It is always more interesting to be able to touch the materials and the games directly in convention.
I thonk that online events ara a great paliative with the current pandemic but they will never replace real events.

It's similar to a concert, it's tasteless when i see it on TV even when i had the chance to see it live.
So it would be cool. I just hope there's actually some cool stuff in there. Actually I was hoping to see something from Razer at the Gamescom in Cologne (Germany). Especially the Tomahawk would have interested me. Hopefully it will come soon. Or maybe a new version of the Core X? With the games I'm not so keen on a certain one now. But I hope there will be some cool ones in the fall.
This is great
nice game i would like to play
thanks for sharing that tho

nice
Definitely, I'll have more fun "in-person", but it would be great to have online events also because we can't be everywhere all the time, especially in nowadays.
Waiting for Hellblade 2, Senua looks soo intense in that segment.
I think it sounds pretty cool. We've needed a dedicated game expo that's similar to E3. I know gamescon was similar and the sxsw was also good. I hope we see some hardware revealed! E3 never seemed like the place for gaming really, so the more dedicated venues to this particular market seems to make the most sense.
