Hi everyone!
Video demonstration
Here's a quick 17-second demonstration of ASUS PRIME X299-DELUXE RGB lighting synchronized with Razer Chroma in real time:
No Armoury Crate, no Aura Sync, and no OpenRGB running in the background — just Razer Synapse 4 and our custom hardware bridge.
I wanted to share a small project that might be interesting to anyone who has struggled to synchronize ASUS motherboard RGB lighting with Razer Chroma.
The problem
I have an ASUS PRIME X299-DELUXE motherboard, and for years I wanted its onboard RGB lighting to synchronize with my Razer devices through Synapse.
Unfortunately, the ASUS Aura / Razer Chroma integration never worked reliably for my setup. I tried different approaches over the years and eventually gave up.
Recently, I decided to revisit the problem with the help of ChatGPT.
The solution
Instead of trying to make ASUS Armoury Crate, Aura Sync, OpenRGB, and Razer Synapse communicate with each other, we took a different approach:
Why not communicate directly with the motherboard's RGB controllers?
After investigating the hardware and experimenting with OpenRGB, we identified the motherboard's ENE RGB controllers and developed a small custom Windows application called ASUS X299 Chroma Bridge.
The application:
-
Receives lighting information from the Razer Chroma Broadcast API.
-
Communicates directly with the ASUS motherboard's RGB controllers over SMBus.
-
Synchronizes the motherboard's lighting with Razer Chroma effects.
-
Runs in the background with a native Windows system tray interface.
-
Supports automatic startup and graceful shutdown.
-
Restores the original RGB controller state when stopped.
-
Does not modify the motherboard's EEPROM.
And here's the best part:
No ASUS Armoury Crate.
No ASUS Aura Sync.
No OpenRGB running in the background.
No additional RGB synchronization software.
Just Razer Synapse 4 and our lightweight custom bridge.
The result
After two days of development and hardware testing, we achieved something I had been unable to accomplish for years.
The motherboard RGB now follows Razer Chroma effects alongside my other Razer devices.
We've tested startup, stopping, restarting, controller state restoration, and simulated Windows shutdown events. Real Windows shutdown and reboot behavior still needs final validation.
A few technical details
-
Motherboard: ASUS PRIME X299-DELUXE
-
RGB controllers: ENE, accessible through SMBus
-
Integration: Razer Chroma Broadcast API
-
Platform: Windows
-
Implementation: Python, with a native Win32 tray interface
-
No firmware modifications or EEPROM writes
This is currently a hardware-specific solution, not a universal ASUS Aura replacement. Other motherboard models would require separate controller identification, register mapping, and safety testing.
Would anyone be interested in a project like this?
I'm curious whether other Razer users are experiencing similar problems with ASUS RGB integration, especially on older motherboards.
If there's enough interest, we might consider documenting the project and exploring whether it could support additional hardware.
For now, I just wanted to share the result — and demonstrate that direct hardware integration with Razer Chroma is possible even when the official software ecosystems don't cooperate.
I'd love to hear your thoughts!
